I had this interesting little discussion with a user called "
meezernine"
He first posted:
Quote:
Humanism. It's sick! He says that there is inate goodness in the hearts of men, Ha! We don't want to hate and despise everyone, then why do we? He even goes so far as to use the bible and twist the meaning of the scripture that he uses. He tells the soldiers to not give themselves to the kind of man he is portaying. Ironic. This character lies through great sweeling words, just like Hitler. He says they have the love of humanity in their hearts, not the love of God! That is the problem.
I respond with:
Quote:
There is innate goodness within the hearts of men. Sure, we don't express it all the times. We don't always care about our fellow man, our fellow woman, or the kids in this world. Yet, we must remember that simply because the news show the depths of human debauchery sometimes does not mean that humanity is naturally evil, it is perhaps more confused if anything. Nor does it mean that humanity does not have the capacity to do great things, both good and evil. If anything, humanity is complex.
To which he responds:
Quote:
Selfishly you say this because you want to believe your own self to be good. Your own standard is perverted and wrong. Given the opportunity and just the right circumstance, humans devise things that are evil beyond measure. What is God's opinion? The heart of man is deceitful above all things, and deperately wicked; who can know it? And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that EVERY imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. God's words.
To which my rebuttal was:
Quote:
No. I do not say this because I want to believe my own self good, for there is a lot of chaotic emotion within it. I say this because I've seen and felt human compassion in its purest form--At hospitals, where people who should be more than distraught with their own family member's conditions instead comforting one another, imparting wisdom and hope to one another. Yes, there are evil things in this world caused by human emotion. But there are also a lot of good things caused by human emotion.
To which he states:
Quote:
Only evil continually. You can look at a two year old child and see that. No one has to teach that kid to hate, or to destroy, or to steal. It is ingrained in the substance of every person from birth. Take away his lolli-pop and, if he could, he would kill whoever dared. Only through conditioning is a person trained to not do things that are called evil. And this is through selfish fear. Don't do such and such or this will happen to you. People must be changed from the inside...by Jesus
Well, I felt bad that this conversation was obscuring the meaning of the clip, so I decided to end it on this note:
Quote:
Hmm...I'm afraid that this will be my last response, for I believe our comments and discussions are greatly detracting from this magnificent video at hand. True, people must be changed from inside. And true, hate does not necessarily need to be taught. But neither does love. Caring for others is as natural as hating people. Though, it would be nice for people to teach more about love than hate, but que sera sera...
Thank you for this discussion. It is perhaps very enlightening and refreshing.
So what do you think of this whole thing? What do you feel about the clip from the Great Dictator, what do you think of Charlie Chaplin, what do you think about the comments, what do you think about everything?
I like the guy's overall message, but seems kind of left for my taste. Whatever.
Guy you were arguing with seemed to be one of those that is so brainwashed in their faith that they can't open their mind to other views. Or he's just really stubborn. ___
