It was not too long ago when I read on BBC that Cubans can now buy computers and other electronics. That was mildly shocking in this day and age of computer pervasiveness but then Cuba is a socialist/communist country where governments have a habit of fearing for their power all the time and anything that empowers the citizens is seen as a credible serious threat.
Video tapes smuggled out by Dashiell Torralba, she dated one of the sons of Fidel Castro, show a lifestyle totally unlike befitting a Communist state that still believes in snickering at capitalist enterprises. (Unlike big daddy China).
From what I have heard, the videos show the communist leader preparing for a sumptuous meal, and lounging on luxurious leather sofas in his villa in Havana, and give the first peek into the residence which most of his own countrymen have never seen themselves or even hear about.
The tapes handed over by Dashiell Torralba have been shot by Fidel’s own children. Trivia - even Cubans are not aware of how many children Fidel has as all the family information is a closely guarded secret and anyone spilling the beans can mysteriously vanish into rum soaked Cuban thin air.
Can the Dashiell Torralba tapes be fakes? Possible but unlikely. Reason being there are lot of recognizable high party leaders in the tapes.
Dashiell Torralba is now hiding in an unknown Latin American country and fears for her life. Is she a perfect candidate for political asylum in United States? Something to seriously deliberate about.
