Hendry, Cubs Make A Deal

[ Category: Cubs ]
[ Working Currently: Working  ]

CHICAGO -- Jim Hendry, who has guided the Cubs to the postseason three times during his six full seasons as general manager, has been given a four-year contract extension through the 2012 season.
Cubs chairman Crane Kenney announced the new deal at the start of the team's organizational meetings in Arizona on Monday.

"Jim is the face of our organization on the baseball side," Kenney said. "Everyone knows what job we have left to do, and I wouldn't trust it to anyone other than Jim, going forward."

Hendry has been the general manager since July 5, 2002, and is the third-longest-tenured GM in franchise history, trailing only John Holland (1957-1975) and James Gallagher (1940-49). The Cubs have posted a 537-513 (.511) record under Hendry, including four winning records in his six full seasons.

Bears Offense and Special Team Comes Alive

[ Category: Bears ]

The last time the Bears scored this many points, Walter Payton was taking handoffs and Mike Ditka was prowling the sideline. Kyle Orton threw two touchdown passes, special teams chipped in with two more and the Bears hung on for a 48-41 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

Chicago intercepted Gus Frerotte four times even though their injury-riddled secondary was missing starting cornerbacks Nathan Vasher and Charles Tillman along with nickel back Danieal Manning. The Bears also lost star kick returner Devin Hester to a quad injury in the third quarter, yet Chicago still managed to put up its most points since beating Tampa Bay 48-14 at home on Dec. 7, 1986. It was the most points they allowed in a win.

They survived a late push by Minnesota after building a 17-point lead and won even though Adrian Peterson ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Orton completed 21 of 32 passes for 283 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown pass to Marty Booker made it 41-31 with 2:35 left in the third quarter. Kevin Payne then picked off Frerotte, and after a questionable pass interference call against Vinny Ciurciu on fourth down at the 1, Matt Forte ran it in to extend Chicago’s lead to 48-31 in the opening seconds of the fourth.

Minnesota got a 23-yard field goal from Ryan Longwell, and former Bear Bernard Berrian capped a 75-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown catch that made it a seven-point game with 3 minutes left.

But this time, the Bears hung on.

Can Derek Rose Be A Factor This Year For The Bulls ?

[ Category: Bulls ]

[b]Probably not. The kid just turned 20 and it’s just not easy to play point guard at the NBA level at such a young age, especially for a guy who is not a great shooter. He’ll be under enormous pressure, playing in his hometown and having been the No. 1 pick ahead of a guy (Miami’s Michael Beasley) who is likely to start posting big numbers right out of the gate. Having said that, Rose is more than holding his own in the early part of the preseason and is showing that, at some point this season—maybe not on opening nigh—the will take over as the Bulls’ starter.

Blackhawks Give Quenneville First Win

[ Category: Blackhawks ]

CHICAGO (AP)—The Chicago Blackhawks’ power play came to life to give new coach Joel Quenneville his first victory with the team.

Patrick Sharp had two goals—one with a man advantage—and an assist to help the Blackhawks beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 on Sunday night.

The Blackhawks went 2-for-5 on the power play after entering the game 2-for-22.

Quenneville took over behind the bench on Thursday after Denis Savard was fired following a 1-2-1 start. On Saturday night in St. Louis in Quenneville’s first game, the Blackhawks blew a 3-1 lead and lost 4-3 in a shootout.

“I liked the response,” Quenneville said. “It was a real emotional loss for us (in St. Louis). There’s a big picture that’s very bright here.

“The skill level of our kids will get better and better. But as a coach, we’re in a short-term business. We want to win hockey games.”

Patrick Kane added a power-play goal and two assists, and Brent Seabrook also scored for Chicago

Kane, the NHL’s rookie of the year last season, was in tears following last Friday’s practice when he was asked about Savard’s dismissal. Kane has three goals and three assists in the last two games.

Marmol In Car Accident

[ Category: Cubs ]
[ Working Currently: Working  ]

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP)—Chicago Cubs reliever Carlos Marmol suffered minor injuries in a car accident early Tuesday in the Dominican Republic.

A truck hit a car carrying Marmol, a cousin and a friend in his hometown of Bonao near 2 a.m. The All-Star right-hander had just arrived in the Caribbean nation after the Cubs were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs.

Marmol said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that the air bag deployed and he only suffered a cut and an “inflammation” of his forehead.

“Out of precaution they did different studies on my body, and I don’t have any kind of serious injury,” he wrote.

A Cubs representative in the Dominican Republic, Jose Serra, said Marmol received seven stitches in his forehead but is otherwise healthy.

Marmol pitched in 82 games this season, going 2-4 with a 2.68 ERA.

White Sox Out Of Playoffs

[ Category: White Sox ]

CHICAGO (AP)—B.J. Upton and these Tampa Bay Rays are headed home—to get ready for the American League championship series.

Worst in the majors last year, the Rays will play for a spot in the World Series after finishing off the Chicago White Sox 6-2 Monday in Game 4 of the AL playoffs.

Ray-markable!

Upton homered twice, Andy Sonnanstine pitched a solid 5 2-3 innings and manager Joe Maddon’s surprising Rays won 3-1 in the best-of-five series—their first trip to the postseason. Next up, the Boston Red Sox or the Los Angeles Angels starting Friday.

Bears Steam Roll Lions 34-7

[ Category: Bears ]
[ Working Currently: Working  ]

DETROIT (AP)—Kyle Orton looked like a star against the Detroit Lions.

Again.

Orton set career highs in yards passing, completions and quarterback rating while throwing two touchdowns to lead the Chicago Bears to a 34-7 win over Detroit on Sunday.

He was 24-of-34 for 334 yards and had a 121.4 rating, improving to 3-0 against Detroit.

Like many NFL players, Orton loves playing the Lions.

“Yeah, I do for some reason,” he acknowledged.

Orton surpassed his previous bests of 22 completions and 268 yards passing— both of which he reached last month against Tampa Bay—and a 103.3 rating, which he set in a 38-6 win over the Lions at home in 2005.

Chicago (3-2) broke a first-place tie with the Green Bay Packers, who lost at home to Atlanta, to lead the lackluster NFC North with about one-third of the season completed.

One of the Chicago Cubs best seasons in a long time gone in a matter of 3 games. I guess you can always say there will be next year but when will the Chicago Cubs actually break the Billy Goat Curse.
