USA Today: We hate to begin the day with a conspiracy theory, but it seems a little too coincidental that the attention-starved WNBA had a rollicking good cat fight last night involving Candace Parker, Lisa Leslie and a whole lot of other members of the LA Sparks and Detroit Shock.
This comes after the equally-ignored Indy Racing League lit up the Internet when its golden goose, Danica Patrick, got on the verge of baring claws on pit row.
The brawl erupted with less than five seconds remaining. Four players were ejected and two technicals were called and it all began with the Shock’s Plenette Pierson and the Sparks’ double-ESPY-winning Parker battling for position on a free throw. And what a Shock the team coached by former Pistons Bad Boy Bill Laimbeer was involved.
"The game was getting out of hand physical-wise, and I warned (the ref) about that and she gave me a warning," Laimbeer told the Detroit Free Press. "But it started to escalate, and players are going to get emotional, and it happens sometimes."
UPDATE: ESPN.com has posted video of the fight.
The Parker-Pierson shoving match put Parker on the floor and led to a wrestling match where Parker appeared to throw a punch, the Free Press reported. Benches cleared, but another tiff developed when the Sparks' Leslie fell while being restrained by Shock assistant Rick Mahorn -- another former Bad Boy. That led LA's Delisha Milton-Jones to step way up and slap Mahorn in the back.
Parker was tossed out along with Pierson, Milton-Jones and Mahorn, and apparently Parker had her memory circuits derailed by the dustup. "I don’t even recall what happened — I'll have to look at the tape," she said.
WNBA President Donna Orender watched the fight unfold on television and told the LA Times she couldn't recall the league ever having on-court violence "to this degree." She added there will be a lengthy review.

WNBA Brawl
Girls Dig Sports: I was so excited to watch this game because it’s the first time Candace Parker has played live on ESPN. I wanted to see her in action. I wanted to see how well she and Lisa Leslie played off of one another. I couldn’t wait to watch.
I tuned in as soon as I got home, expecting to see a competitive game unfold before my very eyes. I had no idea that I was going to see a fight break out.
Apparently it had been a pretty physical game between the LA Sparks and the Detroit Shock. I hadn’t known that when I flipped on ESPN 2. All I know is that Candace and Plenette Pierson started going at it. Next thing you know, both team benches are on the court pushing and shoving one another, including the coaches. Lisa Leslie got pushed to the ground in the scuffle and three players were ejected. It was a mess.
This is something I expect to see in the NBA. Sorry fellas, but all that testosterone makes you act foolish sometimes in the heat of the moment. I thought that we women had more self control than that. Parker has been faulted before for letting her emotions get the best of her. And this time she went too far. There are going to be suspensions and fines handed out for sure. And with the WNBA regular season coming to a close, this doesn’t bold well for the Sparks.
I know many people expected Parker to shape a new image for the WNBA. But I don’t think this is what they had in mind …
