Plot: A year after the fight with Freeza on Planet Namek, whilst waiting for Son Goku to return, the Z-Fighters (including Vegeta) sense that Freeza is on route to Earth and, with Bulma, meet near the suspected landing point. A spaceship eventually lands on Earth. It is then learned that Freeza barely survived Goku's blast and although he was blasted into space, he could survive in the vacuum of space. Bearing serious injuries, he was later found by his father, King Cold, who healed his wounds and rebuilt him as a cyborg. Inside the spaceship, Freeza vows revenge on Goku. King Cold doesn't see why they couldn't simply destroy the planet from space, but Freeza replies that he wants to take revenge on Goku as it was his fault that he has his cybernetic body. He then sends out his henchmen and orders them to find and kill every one of Goku's friends, but before they can act, however, a mysterious Super Saiyan arrives and kills Freeza, King Cold and their henchmen. The newcomer acquaintances himself with the others and hands them out soda, but Vegeta questions him, saying that it's impossible for him to be able to transform into a Super Saiyan as Goku, Gohan and himself are the only known Saiyans still existing. However, the young Saiyan does not reveal anything more. Shortly after, Goku arrives in a spaceship, donning a strange costume. He also reveals his new, unique technique, the Instantaneous Movement, a move which can manipulate the space and time continuum and teleport a person to any place, no matter how far away it is. The mysterious young Saiyan, Trunks, takes him aside and reveals that he is from the future and is the son of Vegeta and Bulma, to Goku's surprise, but tells him not to tell the others as it may endanger his existence. He then gives Goku the warning that in 3 years, two Cyborgs will appear and begin a reign of terror, giving the details of when and how this will happen. He also warns Goku that he will fall victim to a heart virus before this and will die unless he takes the antidote that Trunks has brought for him. Goku tells the others about the warning of the future and the threat of the Cyborgs. Once Trunks leaves, Goku is questioned about his conversation with Trunks, but as he promised he reveals nothing about Trunks' heritage, although Piccolo heard him and Trunks' conversation by using his large ears. The Z-Fighters, armed with this warning, begin training.[1]
Three years after Trunks' warning, Goku, Son Gohan, Kuririn, Yamucha, Tenshinhan, and Piccolo make their way to the city that is supposed to be the target of the Cyborgs. Yamucha is the first to find the two - #19 and #20, but he mistakes them for humans. #20, the dominator of the two, attacks Yamucha, wounding him severely by draining him completely of his energy and piercing him with a hand through his stomach to incapacitate him before the other Z-Fighters arrive to save him. After Kuririn takes Yamucha to Muten Roshi's island, Kame House, to heal him at Goku's request, the Cyborgs and Z-Fighters agree to move to a more isolated area. It is then revealed that #20 knows Goku and everyone else's names. Yamucha, after being healed by a Senzu Bean, realizes that the Cyborgs are capable of absorbing their opponent's energy through their hands.[2]
At their destination, #20 tells the Z-Fighters how he knows their names and reveals that the scientist of the defeated Red Ribbon Army, Dr. Gero, had tracked down the Z-Fighters using little robots and had collected data on all of their abilities. However, Dr. Gero had tracked all the Z-Fighters' information up to when they traveled to Namek, as they had collected enough information for his plan to put into action. To #20's shock, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan and begins his fight against #19. Goku has the upper hand until the effects of the heart virus Trunks predicted accelerate and he is defeated by #19. Before #19 can drain Goku's energy and kill him, Vegeta arrives to save the day. After Vegeta says that Goku should be taken home to be given the antidote, Yamcha leaves with Goku back to his house to apply him with the antidote. Vegeta surprises everyone by transforming into a Super Saiyan. He then destroys a frightened #19 with his Big Bang Attack after a brief battle, leaving only his head. #20 (revealed to be the Cyborgs' creator, Dr. Gero, after Bulma recognizes him) then escapes to activate #17 and #18. The Z-Fighters pursue him while Yamucha takes Goku to his house to receive the heart virus antidote. After discovering #19's head, Trunks joins up with the Z-Fighters and reveals that he doesn't recognize the Androids as the ones in his timeline. The Z-Fighters then split up to find Dr. Gero. Whilst searching for Dr. Gero, Piccolo is ambushed by Gero from behind and almost has his energy drained by him until Gohan, who was alerted to Piccolo's danger via Piccolo's telepathy, arrives and attacks the mad scientist, who is also found by the other Z-Fighters. After Piccolo defeats him (slicing his arm off in the process), Gero activates #17 and #18, but is then killed by #17 when his head is kicked off and crushed by him so Gero can't control them anymore. They also destroy the remote control that can be used to shut them down. #18 then activates #16, whose sole objective is to kill Goku. The Cyborgs are then confronted by a cocky Vegeta. Vegeta manages to hold his own for a while during the fight with #18, but the android eventually defeats him, revealing to Vegeta's amazement that a Super Saiyan is not invincible. Trunks eventually steps in to help Vegeta when his arm is broken, but he is also beaten by #18 after she breaks his sword and Piccolo and Tenshinhan are beaten by #17. Kuririn, who was the only one who didn't fight due to fear, asks the Cyborgs why they want to kill Goku, and #17 replies by saying that it is their mission to kill him, and that they were programmed to kill him. Kuririn reminds them that they took care of Dr. Gero, so they don't need to take orders from him anymore. However, #17 says that killing Goku is a game. Before leaving, #18 kisses him on the cheek. [3]
After Kuririn heals the Z-Fighters with Senzu Beans, Vegeta flies off, ashamed of his defeat, and Piccolo heads to Kami's Lookout to convince Kami to merge with him and become a Super Namekian in order to deal with the Cyborgs. Meanwhile, Bulma discovers a time machine of the same design as Trunks' which arrived a year before he fought Freeza. Bulma, along with Gohan & Trunks, go to investigate it while the other Z-Fighters move Goku into hiding at Kame House. At the Lookout, Piccolo attempts to persuade Kami to fuse with him, but Kami says that he wants to see if the Androids are really as evil as they make out to be and decides to see how things play out, much to Piccolo's frustration. Meanwhile, Bulma, Gohan and Trunks discover a strange cocoon. After Kami discovers an evil which is far more powerful and evil than the Androids, he finally agrees to merge with Piccolo. The Super Namekian then arrives at Gingertown and discovers the time machine's inhabitant, Cell, who has absorbed the life energy of all of Gingertown's residents. After a fight in which Piccolo's energy is drained by Cell through his arm (though the fight mainly stays in Piccolo's favour), he reveals at Piccolo's request that Dr. Gero created him out of cells from the strongest warriors in the universe, such as Goku, Freeza, and the Z-Fighters (seemingly collected from the blood left on the ground during the Saiyan Saga), and gave him possession of all their abilities and techniques. However, Dr. Gero realized that he wouldn't be able to complete the creation of Cell in his lifetime and he programmed his computer to complete the complex task that he had begun. When Piccolo retracts this statement and informs him that they already destroyed Dr. Gero's lab, Cell tells him that the computer Dr. Gero programmed to create Cell was hidden in a bunker deep underground the lab. He continues on to state that he killed Trunks so that he could steal his time machine, travel back in time and absorb #17 & #18 in order to become perfect, since they'd been killed by Trunks in his timeline. However, because he was too large to fit into the time machine, he had to regress to his larval stage before he could return back to his original form. Piccolo says that there was no need for Cell to absorb the Androids as he was already the strongest being in his time, but Cell replies that he could not achieve his perfect form by absorbing humans alone, and that in order for him to become complete, he must absorb #17 and #18, although it could be the DNA of Frieza and Vegeta causing him to want more power. Piccolo tells Cell that his story was just enough time for him to regenerate his arm, scaring Cell. With no other choice, Cell demonstrates his usage of the Z-Fighters' techniques when he uses Tenshinhan's Taikyoken to blind Piccolo and escape to avoid being killed, not before Trunks and Kuririn arrive. Kuririn has a brief encounter with the Cyborg, but Cell defeats him and flies off again.
Soon after, Goku recovers from the heart virus and reveals that he will train to achieve the next level of Super Saiyan. Taking Gohan, Vegeta, and Trunks with him, they go to the Room of Spirit and Time inside Kami's Lookout where they can receive a year's worth of training in just one Earth day. However, only two people can enter the room at once so Vegeta and Trunks enter the room first. Meanwhile, the three Cyborgs arrive at Muten Roshi's island, looking for Goku, and Piccolo is forced to fight. After proving to be a match for #17, Cell arrives. Piccolo and 17 team up to fight Cell but are no match. Piccolo then resorts to finish off Cell with his new powerful technique, the Gekiretsu Kodan, but it fails to do any damage to the powerful Android. Eventually, Cell easily defeats Piccolo by blasting a hole through him and chucking him into the sea. He turns to #17, but is then attacked by #16, who proves to be his equal after throwing him to the ground and seemingly destroying him with his Hell's Flash technique. However, Cell sneaks up on #17 and absorbs him.[4]
After absorbing #17, Semi-Perfect Cell turns his attention to Cyborg 18. Before he can act however, Tenshinhan jumps in and blasts Cell repeatedly with his Kikyoken blast. After he grows exhausted, Tenshinhan collapses but Goku then arrives and takes Tenshinhan and Piccolo back to Kami's Lookout using his Instantaneous Movement where he heals them with Senzu Beans. Before Goku leaves, Cell proposes that he fight Goku, but Goku knows that he isn't strong enough, not without training in the Room of Spirit and Time. Vegeta and Trunks then complete their training and head to the battlefield while Goku and Gohan enter the Time Room, armed with Saiyan combat uniforms designed by Bulma. During their training, Gohan finally manages to transform into a Super Saiyan after realizing that he can't always rely on others to fight his battles for him and, after discovering the weaknesses of the Super Saiyan 2nd Grade and Super Saiyan 3rd Grade forms, Goku plans for the two of them to try staying as a Super Saiyan for a whole day and master the side-effects of Super Saiyan without putting a strain on their energy supply. When he arrives to face Cell, Vegeta boasts of his new power and, after Cell refuses to believe him, Vegeta transforms into a Super Saiyan 2nd Grade. Vegeta beats Cell easily, prompting Cell to appeal to Vegeta's pride. He says he can offer Vegeta a better challenge if he is allowed to absorb #18 and reach his perfect form. Vegeta agrees, to the dismay of Trunks, who had arrived after Cell's defeat. Trunks tries to stop Cell but Vegeta blocks this attempt. After finding the Cyborgs and Kuririn, Cell flies over to them. Trunks makes one last effort to stop Cell, overpowering Vegeta, but is blinded when Cell uses Tenshinhan's Taiyo-ken again. Cell then absorbs #18 after a short struggle. After defeating Kuririn, the now Perfect Cell resumes his battle with Vegeta and it soon becomes apparent that Vegeta is outmatched. Vegeta tries his new powerful technique, the Final Flash, which engulfs Cell in an astounding flash of light and rips across the planet, but even this only manages to remove Cell's arm. Using Piccolo's regeneration ability, he quickly regrows this and defeats Vegeta with ease.[5]
Trunks, anxious to save his now unconscious father, powers up to Super Saiyan 3rd Grade to distract Cell so that Kuririn can take Vegeta away. Trunks, reflecting on the damage the Cyborgs did to his own time line, continues to increase his power level until Cell admits that he is now more powerful than him. However, Cell gloats that this is irrelevant, as his speed has greatly diminished. When this becomes apparent to Trunks, he gives up. Cell, however, does not kill Trunks and instead declares that he will hold a competition in ten days time, in the hope that by then he will have a challenging opponent to face and that he wants to test his power against Goku. After much training in the Time Room, Goku & Gohan emerge as fully-mastered Super Saiyans, and the other Z-Fighters are baffled that they have come out the Time Room as Super Saiyans with relaxed ki levels. In preparation for the Cell Games, Vegeta, Trunks and Piccolo use the Time Room, Goku acquires a new guardian for the Earth, Dende, who is one of the most talented Nameks on the planet according to Moori, and gathers the new Dragon Balls (which can now grant two wishes instead of one thanks to Dende re-channeling Shenlong's power into its wishes) while Bulma repairs #16 so he can also participate in the tournament.[6]
At the tournament ten days later, the Z Fighters arrive, but also see that the current Tenkaichi Budokai champion, Mr. Satan, his pupils and the news crew have also turned up to see the outcome of the Cell Games. Mr. Satan and his pupils, being ordinary humans with no knowledge whatsoever of ki control, are easily defeated, but not killed, by Cell. Goku then takes on Cell but can't destroy him, even by blasting a full-powered Kamehameha blast to Cell's face, as his power is roughly equal to Cell's. Goku finally concedes and picks a new fighter, his son Gohan. Goku knows how much latent potential Gohan has hiding during his training with him in the Time Room, and although the others are pessimistic, Goku tells them to trust him. After an evenly matched fight, Gohan warns Cell of his inner power, which only serves to cause Cell to try and trigger it to see what it's like. When Piccolo decides to help Gohan, Goku stops him and tells him that whenever Gohan gets angry or is backed into a corner with no way out, he will unleash his furious inner strength, and when that happens he'll break down Cell once and for all. When Gohan begins to lose the battle, #16 leaps from the sidelines and grapples with Cell, with the intention of self-destructing, but is then told by Kuririn that Bulma removed his bomb. Cell destroys #16's body, and then, to further anger Gohan into revealing his true power, replicates himself in the form of seven Cell Jrs. After Cell sends out his "children" to destroy the Z-Fighters, Mr. Satan throws #16's head over to Gohan's side. Before being smashed by Cell, #16 tells Gohan he understands that he does not like to hurt others, but in order to protect the Earth, he must use his inner strength to defeat Cell and save the nature that he loved. Seeing #16 die and his friends fall at the hands of the Cell Juniors prompts Gohan into a rage, which ascends him the level of Super Saiyan 2. He is then easily able to destroy the Cell Juniors before turning to Cell.[7]
Gohan easily overpowers Cell, much to Cell's shock and dismay, even effortlessly deflecting Cell's most powerful Kamehameha. With one punch, Gohan damages Cell's body enough to make him regurgitate #18, downgrading Cell to his semi-perfect form. In retaliation, Cell decides to self-destruct, attempting to destroy the Earth. At the last minute, Goku uses his Instantaneous Movement to teleport Cell away to North Kaio's planet, killing himself a second time since the battle against Raditz, along with North Kaio, Bubbles and Gregory (anime-only character). Having managed to keep one of his cells intact, Cell regenerates fully (which also increases his power level, having Saiyan cells in his being), teleports back to Earth (having now picked up the Instantaneous Movement technique he gained from Goku when he exploded), and kills Trunks with a Full Power Death Beam. Vegeta tries to avenge his son with a barrage of energy blasts but is defeated by Cell also. Cell then tries to kill Vegeta with a ki blast, but Gohan throws himself into the blast as a sacrifice, saving Vegeta but rendering his left arm completely useless. Cell then powers up for one last Kamehameha, which would kill not only Gohan, but destroy the Earth in the process. Gohan loses all hope of defeating Cell and gives up until he hears Goku's voice. Encouraged by the dead Goku, who is communicating to him telepathically via North Kaio, Gohan powers up for a one-armed Kamehameha against Cell. The two Kamehamehas meet and a beam-struggle ensues. Kuririn, Yamucha, Tenshinhan, and Piccolo attempt to distract Cell by blasting him with various attacks, but it has no effect on the super-perfect Cell, and Cell's Kamehameha is starting to overpower Gohan's. It is only when Vegeta himself distracts Cell with an attack that Gohan is able to increase his blast without threatening the planet itself and completely destroy Cell for good. After Cell's energy vanishes, the Z-Fighters (apart from Piccolo and Vegeta) leave to get Gohan healed by Dende. Piccolo praises Vegeta for his participation in Cel's defeat, but Vegeta tells Piccolo to leave him alone, which he does. Vegeta thinks to himself about Goku's bravery in his sacrifice and mourns that he never had a chance to prove his strength against Goku. Vegeta then flies off to Dende's Lookout.
With the threat over, Mr. Satan takes credit for Cell's defeat and the world declares him a hero despite the absurdity of him defeating Cell after losing pathetically to him earlier. At Dende's Lookout, the Z-Fighters use the Dragon Balls to restore all those killed by Cell. However, as he feared, Piccolo says that he can't sense Goku's energy. Unfortunately, Goku cannot be wished back to life as Shenlong cannot revive those who have died and been wished back once already, like Goku. However, Goku tells the others he does not want to be wished back to life as his presence on Earth kept putting the planet in danger. Goku assures the others that he is fine with living in the Other World since he is allowed to keep his body and is having a great time with North Kaio. After Goku bids his farewells, Kuririn uses the second wish to remove the bombs out of the Androids so they can live normally and the Z-Fighters return to their peaceful lives. Piccolo decides to remain at the Lookout and teach Dende to become a good god of Earth and unfortunately, #18 doesn't fall for Kuririn immediately and leaves. Later, Trunks returns to his own time line and informs the future Bulma that his mission was a success. He later fights the #17 and #18 of his time and, thanks to his training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, defeats them with ease. Three years later, Trunks is confronted by the Cell of his time and also defeats him, finally bringing an end to the nightmare.
