My Town Talks: Well the latest fad diet is the flat belly diet. It consists mainly of what some people refer to as the Mediterranean diet and as usual these diets have questionable results. The flat belly diet promises you can lose 15 pounds in a little over a month, but as usual these results are not always typical.

The basic Flat Belly Diet plan is a 1,600-calorie Mediterranean-style diet with an emphasis on wholesome, unrefined foods including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans, seeds, lean protein, and very little red meat only about once a month.

The supposed secret ingredient in the Flat Belly Diet that whittles away belly fat is the addition of a monounsaturated fat, or MUFA, at every meal. MUFAs are found in olives, avocados, nuts, seeds, dark chocolate, soybean, flax, and olive and sunflower oils.

"Research shows that MUFAs have health benefits and target belly fat. They also help control satiety, so by adding in one MUFA at meals and snacks it is easier to stick with the plan and lose belly fat,"

Exercise on the flat belly diet is encouraged, but the claims are that you don’t have to even exercise. This is what raised my eyes about the diet. It may work, but I’ve seen these types of fad diets before and they almost always seem to have more fluff than anything else. I’ve found the easiest way to lose those unwanted pounds is through sensible eating and a consistent exercise plan.

For some people even sensible exercising does not seem to work out and let them effectively lose weight. If this is the case then you may want to consider weight loss surgery. One of the safest and a very effective method of weight loss surgery is vertical sleeve surgery and it has worked very well for some people.
