Tech Tree: NBC, a television network in the USA, has announced special Olympics coverage, in what is touted to be the most massive media project in history. It promises to offer 3,600 hours of coverage of the Olympics spread over 19 days, seven networks and a website, NBCOlympics.com, reports the Guardian.
So starting today, NBC and six other networks namely USA Network, MSNBC, CNBC, Oxygen, Universal HD and Time Warner Cable will present 1,400 hours of Olympics coverage and the website will stream 2,200 hours, all free. Out of 3,600 hours of total coverage, 2,900 hours will be live.
NBC has paid $894 million to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for gaining the rights to this massive coverage. It will present most of the marquee events including gymnastics, swimming, track and field - in prime time despite the 12 hours time difference between eastern China and the US.
However, NBC is not the only source for staying updated with the Olympics event over the Internet. IOC too has launched an online channel to broadcast the Olympic Games in 77 territories across Africa, Asia (including India and West Asia), Republic of Korea, Nigeria and Indonesia.
