Sex without restrictions is so compelling that it can keep you from other things you should probably be focusing on.
Advantages of abstaining before marriage:
1. Gives you a chance to get to know people better. Once you start schtupping, it's hard to think of them as anything other than a possible schtupping partner, competition, or null. It's human nature especially between the ages of 14 and 23 or so. YMMV.
2. Gives you a chance to get to know your whole self better.
3. Lets you focus on matters important to your future rather than spending every waking moment trying to figure out how to get some more SEX!
4. Helps you to choose a partner based on something other than just sex. A marriage should last a very long time. After marriage (or commitment), sex really helps smooth the rough spots, but if that's all there is, it won't help for long. You WILL come up for air.
Waiting is good. I didn't. Looking back, I can see that I made too many important decisions that were based on sex that would have been better made for more long term reasons.
Disadvantages:
1. Some jerk (that you wouldn't give the time of day to a year from now) with make fun of you for being a virgin. Be wise; don't make decisions based on transitory embarrassment.

Good advice, I'll admit. But you're assuming that the vast majority of people rush into having sex with someone they know absolutely nothing about. I don't know about the rest of the people here, but me and all of the people I know IRL wouldn't jump into to bed with the first guy (or girl) to say nice things to them. Myself and the people I know, we do wait until we know the other person practically inside and out. And even then, we don't leap into it with our eyes closed. I agree that a relationship will most likely last longer if you wait but I don't agree that it's the deciding factor as to whether or not a relationship will last based on sex. Nor do I think that it will smooth out the rough patches of a relationship. Relationships are built on communication, not sex. No communication means no relationship. So again I say, good advice, but I can't say that it applies to everyone. ___
