Computer Term
A RAID is short for Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks, a category of disk drives that employ two or more drives in combination for fault tolerance and performance
. RAID disk drives are used frequently on servers but aren't generally necessary for personal computers. RAID allows you to store the same data redundantly (in multiple paces) in a balanced ay to improve overall performance. :|
Nerd Jargon
A large number of players working toward the same objective. These players are too large in number to be a group (or party), so they are a raid.
Raids are found in all mmo's. Most of the time a raid consists of 15 or more players, and usually doesnt exceed 50 players. If a nerd says he is raiding, that means he is one of the players in the very large group and is helping contribute to the end goal. Depending on your situation, raiding could be an obligation, or something fun to do. Since so many players are involved in a raid, achieving the end goal can sometimes take many many hours. In some cases, a guild leader may require raid attendance to maintain guild membership. Since raiding can take many hours, the leaders of the raid need to make sure they can count on people showing up...for this reason, a guild may have "raid signups". Members of the guild will offically state their dedication of time to the raid, and are required to show up. Not showing up to a raid you've signed up for, or bailing on a raid before it ends can hurt your online reputation, as well as hindering the rest of the people raiding from finishing their goal. ___

In Layman's term a raid is to have a group of people attack something. ___
