Your health teacher is a liar. Marijuana is not physically addictive, you can't OD on it, it doesn't cause cancer, it doesn't do as much damage to your lungs as cigarettes do....all it does it make you feel awesome. And that's why so many people do it. |

Marijuana is safer than cigarettes or alcohol. More tar is released from Marijuana than tobacco of the same quantity. This is the source of the myth that it is 5 times as bad for you. It is important to understand that this tar is far less toxic than tobacco smoke.
Marijuana is know to slightly suppress the immune system temporarily.
It is also know to slow the growth of tumors. Marijuana smokers are less likely to get cancer then those that do not smoke Marijuana. This is after controlling for other factors such as tobacco use since there is a correlation among users.
It has also been found to bring hormone levels in both sexes towards a more statistical average. This effect is also slight and temporary. |

One marijuana cigarette (I'll call it a joint from now on) contains more carcinogens than 3 tobacco cigarettes (just cigarettes from now on).
However, the average cigarette smoker smokes something like 7 times the number of cigarettes per day as the average marijuana smoker smokes joints. Also, marijuana is less addictive.
Most of the dangers of marijuana don't come from the drug itself, but from the market. Many dealers and suppliers will cut marijuana with cheaper, more deadly, more addictive drugs in order to make a better profit. There's no way to tell this has happened until you've smoked it. This isn't a failing of marijuana itself, but of the market being unable to regulate its sale and production because of its illegality. Basically, by making it legal, you can solve the largest problem that the drug presents.

TigerFangRed - A great topic to write a paper on.....I did one a year or so ago for an ethics class on "illegal" drugs versus "legal," prescribed drugs and the research was quite entertaining. Be sure to research the historical records, myths, etc., of all drug usage, including marijuana.
Marijuana by itself cannot kill you and it is a myth for many that it is a gateway drug......if it truly is, then what is alcohol? |
