MLB.com: Wandering through the visiting clubhouse -- in the city to which former Packers quarterback Brett Favre had just been traded -- Brian Giles joked that the NFL had approved a swap that would send him to Green Bay in the legend's stead.
While professional football isn't calling, the Red Sox might be, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. The paper wrote on its blog on Thursday that Giles had been claimed off waivers by Boston, possibly in an effort to block the Rays and Angels from acquiring the right fielder.
Boston now has an exclusive 48-hour window to work out a deal for Giles, whose contract includes the Red Sox as one of 10 teams to which he can veto a trade.
If the two clubs do not reach an agreement, Giles will stay with San Diego.
Giles, batting .296 with six home runs and 37 RBIs this season, is currently in his sixth season with the Padres.
