So here it is: the holiday season in once again upon us and for many that means lots of travel. Such is also the case for my perpetual student and I. We all have our travel essentials and I thought I would share ours. Keep in mind we don't have children. Without further ado:

1. Audio materials are a must have since I easily get sick reading in the car. There are four sources we hit up. First, we go to the library for books on tape/CD. Our library is pretty popular so if we want a classic, we have to request it in advance. Not too long ago my perpetual student discovered LibriVox which allows us to download audio material for free. Sometimes we burn them on CDs and sometimes I put them on my IPod. We also love NPR podcasts. You can select a particular program from the NPR website and within that link, find and download free podcasts. My personal favorite is This American Life. Finally, I like to hit up our personal musical library and create road trip playlists to put on my IPod. I like to pick songs that provide energy and are classics we enjoy singing with as well as jazz mixes for more pensive moments. One particular roadtrip I played DJ and dedicated sappy song after sappy song to my perpetual student. Sometimes I sang along with the sappy songs in a cheesy manner. It was fun.

2. Knitting is something I can do without really watching what I'm doing so I can knit without getting car sick.

3. Snacks keep us happy, help us resist the temptation to buy overpriced, unhealthy snacks at gas stations, and reduce the number of stops we make. I'm lazy so none of our snacks take much work. We are fans of hummus so often times we buy tasty, locally made, herb bread and a container of hummus. You can't go wrong with apples and peanut butter. (I like to alternate bites off the apple and bites of peanut butter off a giant spoon. It may be gross since I "double dip" if you will but it's just the two of us and we kiss so why care?) I'm also addicted to crackers. Kashi's TLC cheddar crackers are my absolute favorite. For my sweet tooth (besides the apples), I like to snack on dried cranberries sweetened with apple juice. Yum! (I try to avoid chocolate since it melts.) Finally, (I saved my favorite for last) I love drinking Kombucha, which is fermented green tea. I have a tendency to get gassy and constipated after sitting in a car for many hours and Kombucha seems to prevent it from happening. Plus Kombucha just makes you feel good. If you've never tried it before, I highly recommend it. It's expensive so for us it's a treat we buy only for car trips.

4. My pillow is a must have because car rides make me sleepy. Plus, I have allergies and asthma and my pillow is special and prevents the buildup of allergens. If I use any other pillow, I wake up congested.

And that is my list of road trip essentials. If flying on a plane, I loose the snacks and my pillow and add books and an issue of Real Simple magazine.
