With much fanfare, Rosie O'Donnell hosted the first episode of Rosie Live last week. Billed as the comeback for night time variety shows, Rosie Live failed to bring in much of an audience, and actually tied for the lowest rated program of the evening. With segments including Kathy Griffin's bad impersonation of Nancy Grace, and Alec Baldwin tossing a pie into the face of Conan O'Brian, the show was instantly recognized by some critics as an effort to find a low-cost, advertising-friendly television show for cash-starved networks. Reviews, however, were far from positive. Some called Rosie Live an hour long ego trip, an utterly uninteresting program, and a cheesy show with an enemy list. Clips from the program may be seen below:
Discussion Questions:
1. How does the variety show differ from other formats for television programs? Why would networks want to bring it back?
2. Why might variety shows struggle in modern America? What conditions have changed so that the shows have lost their appeal?
3. Was the failure of Rosie Live the fault of its host? Could variety shows be hosted successfully by somebody else?
