the other day i stumbled upon a shrunken, disembodied lizard head (w/out eyes) snared on the tip of an ocotillo spine (how it arrived there - i have not a clue). i placed it inside of a hollow, bonelike piece of woody cholla skeleton, and put the talisman in my pocket. continuing further up the wash i approached a table alone in the middle of a cleared sandy area, surrounded by creosote bushes. at first the laminate surface appeared all weather-worn, warped, and discolored, but up close these turned out to be painted renderings of the very same mountain ridges that encircle us here, along with daubs and dabs of an artist contriving her colors. there was also a flat, broken stone sitting on top, brushed with some astral bodies and a phrase ("the moon & stars to rule by night..." - from some psalm). two names were etched in acrylic on this oversized, left-behind pallet (too young to be pictographs): "jesus" - in the hottest of pinks, and a modest brown "rhonda".
{click my sketch for talisman photo - drawing has been contrasted for more transcendent representation of reptilian afterlife armor}
aha, that explains the anomalous forgotten furniture. rhonda was the lady who was pulling out and heading north to colorado last week, rather than staying for the winter, like normal. "trying something new", she said to me, after i opted out of her offer of (yet another) leaky water container. "i'll just take it to the dumpster, then. have a good time in dudley's old spot (you probably saw his chair and rake hidden over in the wash). it was so sad when he just died there so suddenly last year. oh well, enjoy - this place is the best when it comes to solitude." i went back to my dead man's chair. we had found it, as well as the rake, a few days earlier (putting them both to use in our little camp), and now the addition of the old wooden wheel table (i think it's original use was for coiling up cables or hoses?), which i also found in rhonda's leavings, finalizes our outdoor decor nicely.
i just discovered this lone entry in my short-lived daily journal, from exactly one year & four months [and 2 days] ago:
7/18/07 - 8:09 pm
started a journal. before that, ate more organic dried mangos from sunshine natural foods (very good). before that, began capturing our video spanning our stay in the anza borrego, through the months in arizona, and ending with the cuddling/kissing/[omitted due to depiction of carnal acts], (which was spectacular), here in the trailer, on our 7 years anniversary, at san simeon state park.
this followed our second great meal of the day (curried carrot sweet potato soup + organic rosemary + garlic pugliese breads). first we had to wash off the soup that leaked out in the orange bowling/grocery bag, and i also filled the little stove lighter thing with butane from the refill can they gave us for free at our last stop before coming home - love me 2 times thrift store in cambria. also got (and paid for) nice stretchy (non-smelling) brown pants, and for [omitted due to her having dispensed with her given name since then], a baggy of lacy brown ribbon. they benefit a local animal rescue organization, much like the other love me 2 times in morro bay, where we bought striped sheets earlier. this preceeded our visit to giovanni's at the embarcadero, where we got the aforementioned bread, and "robin" got us set up with fryer grease (1 bucket full). now that we found out we can run grease almost immediately (and with no more stalling), this should prove to be very useful, and we'll most likely return for more before leaving the area.
before giovanni's and the thrift store, we got white fang & the golden notebook at coalesce used book store ("what more do you want from me?") our first stop in morro bay was sunshine natural foods, for our first helping of soup, along with spring rolls, and a smoothie (!!!) we got groceries too (lots of produce). the drive down saw us running some grease, and listening to "come along - come along":
before that, we went to the mechanic and scheduled the oil cooling line repair for friday (we'll either get the campsite again, or we'll park the trailer on village st. by the shop). the morning saw us listening to sunshower [a smooshy smooshy song from our early days], hugging, kissing, and loving, and me driving to san simeon post office & hitting a bird that issued from the dense fog. RIP

preceding this here delayed post, a ghostly kit fox floated through our little frontage last night, emitting only the slightest crunch crunch of gravel beneath barely earthbound paws. she seemed not to mind my presence, probably sensing my absolute exhaustion and immobility after the previous night's failed expedition to the base of the mountains (made camp just on the other side of the dry lake shore, opting to explore an incredible, incongruous grove of rooibos-smelling trees the following morning, rather than pursuing the ever-distant foothills), as well as the subsequent flesh-broiling return crossing, and latest [omitted carnal acts], that led me to retreat into the cool evening air in the first place. or was it the last place? oh, linear chronology.
