Fall Out Boy To Say Farewell?

[ Category: News in Music ]

'What a Catch, Donnie' clip is full of metaphors hinting at the band's farewell.

Well, it's finally here. After much consternation and hand-wringing, Fall Out Boy premiered their video for "What a Catch, Donnie" on Thursday morning (August 6) on MTV. And by the time you've read this sentence, those whispers that it might just be the band's final video will have probably graduated to a full-blown roar.

Because, despite FOB's insistence that "Donnie" isn't a goodbye so much as it's "a cliffhanger," the clip plays as one long swan song. Much like the song itself, it's nostalgic — there are nods to at least half a dozen previous videos in it — and symbolic: Fall Out frontman Patrick Stump piloting a rickety ship out toward the horizon, stopping occasionally to salvage bits of the band's past. And that's not even counting the ending, which is like getting walloped over the head by one giant metaphor.

The video opens with Stump as the solitary sailor, plinking on a piano, scribbling in a journal and staring out at the vast seascape. We don't know how long he's been on this voyage, or even where he's going, but we know he's very much alone, and the days have taken to dragging into weeks (or even months). Eventually, the monotony is broken up when a wayward seagull lands on his ship, and Stump nurses it back to health — a nod, Wentz told MTV News, to the life of reclusive genius Nikola Tesla. And then things start getting interesting.

Off in the distance, Stump notices a sinking ship and an accompanying trail of wreckage. But this isn't your average flotsam and/or jetsam; it's literally pieces of Fall Out Boy's past. The antlers from their breakout "Sugar, We're Going Down" video. The striped coat Stump wore in the clip for "Dance, Dance." The giant "FOB" backdrop from "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs." The casket Joe Trohman emerges from (and solos upon) in "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race."

Stump fishes them out of the water, then spots a spate of life rafts on the horizon. Sitting on the water are Trohman, drummer Andy Hurley and a host of FOB's pals, including Panic! at the Disco's Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith (guess former Panic members Ryan Ross and Jon Walker didn't make it out alive). Stump pulls all of them aboard, and all of a sudden, his lonely boat has become a floating monument to his band's past achievements. Instant nostaligia.

But back on the sinking ship — which is now quickly disappearing below the waves — we see Pete Wentz. He's sitting in the crow's nest, smiling. He gives a salute as the water envelops him. He's literally going down with the ship, like any good captain should (I believe this is what we in the business call "a visual metaphor"). This is not noticed by Stump and the rest of his shipmates, who head out to sea — toward the future, and rather happily so.

What happens next? At the moment, we don't know much of anything. Maybe this is where that mysterious "other video" Wentz mentioned will come into play. Or maybe it won't, and this really is it for Fall Out Boy (though, knowing them, I sort of doubt it). But if this is their swan song and FOB really are ready to sail off into the sunset, well, "Donnie" is the most fitting farewell I can think of. It's unquestionably the best video they've ever made — visually striking, somber and pretty in tone, smart in subject matter. And if Wentz and company have learned anything over the past half-decade, it's that it's always best to go out on top. Even if you're at the bottom of the ocean.

''The Jay Leno Show' Premier; Jay-Z To Perform

[ Category: News in Music ]

Along with Kanye West and Rihanna, the artist will headline with Jay's new single, 'Run This Town,' on September 14.

Jay-Z is surely talking about New York City in his new single, "Run This Town," featuring Kanye West and Rihanna. But unless he's got something up his sleeve, it looks like the first TV performance of the track, from his upcoming album, The Blueprint 3, will be taking place on the West Coast.

It was confirmed on Thursday (August 6) that the MC will be joined by Kanye West and Rihanna to perform the track on the premiere episode of "The Jay Leno Show," the comic's new NBC show. The show is scheduled for September 14 at 10 p.m., just a few days after Jay releases his album on September 11.

Leno will be embarking on a new stage in his career as he transitions from manning "The Tonight Show" to a prime-time variety hour.

Jay, of course, recently purchased his recording independence after paying a reported $5 million to secure the rights to his music away from longtime recording home Def Jam Records. The rapper inked a massive deal with Live Nation and partnered with Atlantic Records, where longtime Jay-Z industry allies Lyor Cohen and Kevin Lives will help him distribute the final album in his Blueprint trilogy.

Kanye West and Rihanna will join Jay-Z soon to shoot the video for "Run This Town," which will be helmed by director Anthony Mandler, who worked with the rapper on his clip for "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)."

Paula Abdul Discusses 'American Idol' Departure

[ Category: News in Music ]

Paula Abdul, who announced via Twitter that she's leaving "American Idol" on Tuesday, talked about the situation with TMZ at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport on Wednesday.

"It's been overwhelming, what's going on right now," she said, adding that any offers coming her way these days are being considered. "So I have to really carefully think about it."

One of those offers came from former "American Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe to appear on his show, "So You Think You Can Dance." He told "Access Hollywood,", "I'll ask her to come on the show... possibly as a performer and as a dancer." He also told TVGuide.com that now that she's free of her "Idol" duties "she's got no excuse" but to come on his show as well.

But if the offer is on the table, Abdul said she wasn't aware of it. "I didn't know I was being given an offer," she said. "I love the show. It's a wonderful show, [but] I don't know."

Until she actually figures out what the next step in her career is, Abdul did share that there are a few very important things she'll miss most now that her time is over with the show after eight seasons. "My compadres, of course," she said. "I love the kids, and that's the thing I enjoy, but they all reached out and called me."

Apparently, the kids aren't the only ones who are missing Abdul these days. "[Simon and I talk] all the time," she said. "He misses me already."

Eminem Vs. Mariah: Fans Take Sides

[ Category: News in Music ]

Whose side are you on?

Soon after Eminem released his track "Bagpipes From Baghdad," which takes aim at Mariah Carey, there had been speculation that Carey's single and the video for "Obsessed" were a counterattack on the rapper. Everyone in Carey's camp denied the rumors, but it seems like Eminem responded with another dis track, "The Warning."

Now fans are taking sides, saying Mariah needs to own up to her reported relationship with the rapper. "Eminem just OWNED Mariah," QUEST IS ABDC wrote on MTVNews.com. "Play with fire, you'll get burned. She needs to admit and face the truth about the relationship. If they didn't really have a relationship, Eminem wouldn't go this far. He's telling the TRUTH."

Meanwhile, jpowell06 wrote, "I like Mariah and all, but she kinda had it comin'. If you had a relationship with the dude, just say it and be over it. Don't deny it. Em is just being Em, hate it or love it. I think he went a lil overboard with the name callin', but I still love him, cuz he's always being real and tellin' it like it is. I wanna see what Nick Cannon gonna say about this one."

Despite the song's racy content, Liss2504 can't help but love Em for making "The Warning." "I love Em!" she wrote. "But dis is HARSH! I still love him!"

But there are a few fans who don't think too highly of Em's song. "Eminem has officially fell off," Bashmatic wrote. "When Rick Ross ... says he's not what he used to be, Em is as quiet as a mouse. Instead, he goes after an R&B singer. Never in the history of rap has this been cool."

Zoidburg took Mariah's side: "We will only be talking about this until Mariah's next single. Eminem don't matter!"

But there are still the fans who think the whole thing is just about publicity. "I think it's all for sales," Andrew told MTV News in Times Square. " 'Cause when you hear Mariah going at Em, everybody's going to wanna hear it."

Antwone Wright agreed, saying, "It's all a publicity stunt."

And some felt that the track confirms everyone's suspicions: Mariah's "Obsessed" was, in fact, all about Em. "I guess that was Eminem in Mariah's new video, because he sure sounds pissed off on that dis record," Asonye88 wrote. "If I was Mariah, I would leave Em alone! Dude is really crazy!"

Chelle06 added: "He went hard on this track, but this dude seriously got voice mails from, like, nine years ago. That sounds a lil obsessed!"

What are your thoughts? Feel free to express them below!

Jay-Z Pays Tribute To Beastie Boys' MCA

All Points West Festival - Jay opens his set with Beasties' classic 'No Sleep Till Brooklyn.'

Jay-Z, who replaced the Beastie Boys in the All Points West festival lineup after the group's Adam "MCA" Yauch was diagnosed with cancer last month, paid tribute to the Beasties and the MC during his performance at the fest on Friday night.

Jay opened his set with a roaring version of the Beasties' 1986 classic "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" — changing the song's "Beastie Boys at the Garden, cold kickin' it live" line to "Jay-Z, All Points West, kickin' it live" — as images of Brooklyn street signs flashed on the video screen above him. Jay, a Brooklyn native like Yauch, then tore into his own "Brooklyn Go Hard."

He later dedicated his entire 80-minute set — which featured tracks from his forthcoming Blueprint 3 LP, including the live debut of "Run This Town" — to Yauch. Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who also performed at the festival on Friday, wore an armband that said "Get well MCA" during her group's set.

The Beasties announced late last month that they would be canceling all of their upcoming shows and pushing back the release of their new album, Hot Sauce Committee, Part One, so that Yauch can receive treatment for cancer in his parotid gland, a salivary gland in the throat; doctors are optimistc that he will make a full recovery. In addition to APW, the cancellations by the hip-hop trio include Lollapalooza, a headlining slot at the Osheaga Fest in Montreal and another at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco.

Lacuna Coil

[ Category: Metal ]
[  Mood: Cool ]

Lacuna Coil is an Italian rock band from Milan, Italy, formed in 1994. Formerly known as Sleep of Right and Ethereal, the band was inspired by the combination of gothic imagery and music, and the members have been known, musically, for composing midtempo songs consisting of guitar lines overlaid with prominent keyboard work, and contrasting dual female/male vocal harmonies to help create a melodic detached sound. Much of the band's recent material, however, sees a heavier and more down-tuned style, featuring a more distinct bass line and a higher mixing of the guitars within the songs.

The band's 2006 release, Karmacode peaked at number 28 on the Billboard 200. Their latest release, Shallow Life, debuted at number 16 on the Billboard charts. The album marks the band diverging their sound from gothic metal to straight-forward alternative hard rock.

Beginning - Lacuna Coil EP (1994-1998)

Andrea Ferro and Marco Coti Zelati formed Sleep of Right in Milan, Italy, 1994, and recruited Raffaele Zagaria on guitars, and Michaelangelo on the drums. After releasing two demos, Bleeding Souls and Noise of Bolgia, Claudio Leo became the band's second guitarist, and Leonardo Forti replaced Michaelangelo on the drums after his departure. The band asked Cristina Scabbia, a friend, to sing background vocals briefly, which led to her officially joining Sleep of Right. Soon after, the band changed their name to Ethereal, and signed to Century Media at the end of 1997. Finding that the name Ethereal was already taken by a Greek band, they changed their name to Lacuna Coil, which means empty spiral.

The band released a self-titled EP through Century Media in 1998. Shortly after, there came the departure of bandmates Raffael Zagaria, Claudio Leo, and Leonardo Forti. As a result, guitarist Cristiano Migliore and drummer Cristiano Mozzati were recruited officially. At this point, the band was touring with Moonspell after the release of the Lacuna Coil EP.

In a Reverie (1998-2000)

Following a second European tour, the band recorded their debut full-length album, In a Reverie, and added second guitarist Marco Biazzi. The band supported the album with another European tour, co-headlining with Skyclad. Allmusic rated the album 4 stars, saying it was "a fine debut by a band that bears watching." The band toured much more, participating in Milan's Rolling Stone magazine-sponsored venue, plus as a show headlined by a German band.

Halflife EP-Unleashed Memories (2000-2002)

Following the debut, In A Reverie, Half-Life was released in 2000 with five songs, entitled "Half Life," "Hyperfast," "Stars," (A cover of a Dubstar single), "Trance Awake," and a demo version of a future song, "Senzafine." "Senzafine" was added onto the band's next big project: their 2001 album Unleashed Memories. The studio album only had ten songs onto it, but a future release included the five songs from the Halflife EP. Allmusic rated it 3 stars.

Comalies (2002-2006)

The band was in for a change for the better when its breakthrough album, Comalies was released in 2002; it received high reviews from certain corners of the metal world. A significant player on Europe's metal scene for nearly a decade at this point, the band was virtually unknown in the U.S.A. until it began touring there. Uranium gave the band some of its earliest U.S. exposure; over a year later, the first single from Comalies -- "Heaven's a Lie" -- began to receive radio and media attention, pulling the band into North America's musical mainstream. Networks such as Fuse played the song's video, for example. The second single, "Swamped," was played in heavy rotation and used in the video game Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. It also appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Music videos were filmed for both songs and broadcast on MTV2's Headbanger's Ball, which also had the band perform a live, acoustic rendition of "Heaven's a Lie".

By 2004, Comalies had become the best-selling CD in Century Media's history. The band appeared at Ozzfest in between headlining club tours in the U.S.A. and Europe.

A bonus, extended version of Comalies was released both in stores and on iTunes. This version consisted of both live and acoustic versions of the songs "Heaven's A Lie," "Swamped," "Unspoken," "Aeon," and "Senzafine" from Unleashed Memories.

Karmacode (2006-2008)

In an effort to best exploit Lacuna Coil's ascendant popularity, the band and label postponed the release of their highly-anticipated follow-up to Comalies -- Karmacode -- to early 2006. According to the band's website, this made it possible for more time to be spent on production, and, to avoid the crowded summer 2005 release schedule for metal albums. On December 23, 2005 the band announced on their web site that all recording, mixing, and mastering on Karmacode had been completed. It was then announced that Karmacode would be released in the USA on April 4, 2006. "Our Truth" was the first single (and video); it was featured on the soundtrack of the movie Underworld: Evolution. The video went into rotation on MTV and the single peaked in the top forty on the U.S. Mainstream Rock charts, also the song was featured in Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour.

During their 2005 European Tour, Lacuna Coil performed two new songs (working titles "A2" and "Antonio") at selected concerts. "Our Truth" was referred to at the time as "Antonio". "A2" was re-named "Fragile", which is the opening track on Karmacode.

Karmacode debuted at #28 on the Billboard Charts. It was acclaimed by music critics and magazines. Corresponding with the release of the new album, Lacuna Coil toured with Rob Zombie throughout North America in early 2006, it also appeared at Ozzfest 2006 on the main stage. The band also played at the 2006 Download Festival (a three-day music festival in England's Donington Park), which was headlined by Metallica, Tool, and Guns N' Roses. It also played one night in the U.K. at Sheffield Corporation on October 17, 2006. That December, Lacuna Coil teamed up with In Flames, The Sword and Seemless for a U.S. Tour, as well as The Blackest of the Black 2006 Tour (with headlining act Danzig, and bands like Asesino, Belphegor, and The Haunted).

Four singles were officially released from Karmacode: "Our Truth," "Closer," "Within Me," and a cover of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence."

In March 2007, Lacuna Coil joined Stone Sour and Shadows Fall on the Jägermeister Music Tour. In May, it toured the USA with Within Temptation and The Gathering, on the The Hottest Chicks in Metal Tour 2007.

Departing from the official tour dates, the band stopped in Raleigh, North Carolina in early April to play with local bands Wounded Soul, Blatant Disarray, and Shadows Fall. It again departed from the tour schedule in Albuquerque, New Mexico in late April to play the Sunshine Theater with Stolen Babies, Beneath the Sky, and Shadows Fall.

In October 2007 Lacuna Coil played for the first time in Japan, during the Loudpark Festival '07 in Saitama City's Saitama Super Arena. In November 2007 they joined Megadeth, DevilDriver, Static-X and Bring Me the Horizon for the Australian leg of Megadeth's Gigantour.

Shallow Life (2009)

In the magazine Rock Sound, it was recently announced that Lacuna Coil's fifth studio album, that will be produced by Don Gilmore, would have some Arabic influences.

Cristina Scabbia announced to Rock Sound,"It's different, but it's our style. We haven't done anything absolutely different from our style, because that wouldn't be natural, that would be weird - it wouldn't be us. The songs are definitely more powerful, more complete, more intense, more straight-to-the-point".

Andrea Ferro told Rock Sound,"We've put more attention on the real meaning of the songs, so the vocals are a bit more prominent. We've worked a lot with Don Gilmore on the pronunciation of the words in English, so people really understand the meanings of the words. There are strong choruses, where people can relate and really understand what we mean". On December 13th, 2008 it was revealed that the new album would be called Shallow Life[20]. The album was released in Europe on April 20, 2009 and in the United States on April 21, 2009. It debuted on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart at number sixteen, selling 21,000 copies and becoming Lacuna Coil's first Top 20 album in the U.S.

In February/March 2009, Lacuna Coil played at the Australian music festival Soundwave with other big metal acts including DevilDriver, In Flames, Lamb of God and Nine Inch Nails. The festival spanned five capital cities, at which they performed their new single, Spellbound, from the upcoming album for the first time.

Music and the Brain

How Important is Music to A Child’s Development?

Over two decades ago researchers in the US began studying the link between learning ‘to read music and play the piano’, and ability in Math and Science.

This led to a ten year UCLA study comparing results for young students taking music versus students taking computer classes. Students learning to read music and play the piano scored significantly higher on Math and Science assessments.

Researchers then went on to prove that learning to read music and play the piano has other cognitive benefits. Hong Kong university of China discovered that not only does the regimen of learning to read and play music increase the rate of learning new vocabulary, but it results in a permanent increase in the learning rate. If the music learning process stops, the increased capacity is retained. If the challenging music program starts again, the rate of learning increases further.

This makes sense. Consider that reading music requires the student to look at music notation (an abstract symbol set) and decode it. Playing music requires that decoded information to be used to guide ten fingers on the piano keyboard. The brain is operating challenging receptive and productive processes simultaneously, which is good exercise for the cerebral cortex, and it soon causes permanent changes in this important area of the brain.

One recent MIT study determined that the cerebral cortex of a concert pianist is enlarged by 30% on average compared to people that are considered intellectuals, but who did not have instrumental music education. Another CA study found that 75% of Silicon Valley CEO’s had instrumental music education as a child.

There are several less-tangible, but important advantages to learning to read music and play an instrument. In one Chicago High School the dropout rate improved dramatically, two short years after a challenging music program was introduced to all students.

Slim Da Mobster, New Protege of Dr. Dre?

[ Category: News in Music ]

Also of Eminem and 50 Cent, apparently. The South Central rookie will be featured on Dre's Detox, alongside Lil Wayne and T.I., in Mixtape Daily.

We all know Dr. Dre has an ear for beats, but the West Coast superproducer also has a keen sense of recognizing upcoming lyrical talent.

Dre's The Chronic launched Snoop Dogg's career, and his second solo album, 2001, helped solidify Eminem as a serious talent to pay attention to in the game. With his third opus on the way, the good doctor has tapped South Central rookie Slim Da Mobster to contribute to Detox, alongside heavyweights like Lil Wayne and T.I.

"I'm not even focused on my album right now," Slim told us in Los Angeles. "I'm all about his album. 'Cause the better I do on that, the better it is for the situation with my album."

Da Mobster might be new on the scene, but the Los Angeles rhyme-spitter impressed Eminem so much that he pushed to have him ink a deal.

After getting the co-signs from the big homies Dre and Em, 50 Cent was the next to jump onboard behind the young rapper. Now, Slim Da Mobster is the first artist signed to all three artists, representing G-Unit/Shady/Aftermath.
To add to the repertoire, Slim is managed by industry veteran John Monopoly, who helped usher Kanye West from producer to breakthrough artist.
