myfoxphilly: Campaign songs have been an important part of presidential races almost since there's been a USA.
Now the McCain campaign is about to adopt a new one about his running mate.
Fox 29's Gerald Kolpan introduces you to the small town Berks County man who wrote the new tune.
With the economy tanking, Sarah Palin has been largely absent from the front pages the past few days. But this could put her back.
“She’s a moose shootin' mama and she'll help keep our country free. She’s a moose shootin' mama, she'll make a great VP...” crooned Pat Garrett.
It’s called "Moose Shootin' Mama" and its creator is a singer-songwriter and sheepskin coat magnate from Strausstown, Pa., name of Pat Garrett. He's a good country music Republican, and he likes that lady from 'laska.
“When she looks you in the eye, you know that girl don't lie...” sang Garrett.
“I thought ‘Wow! What a great idea!’ but you gotta strike while the iron is hot and I thought, 'Ahh, I’ve wrote a million of these novelty songs before - the Monica Lewinsky polka - (laugh!) I had song ready for Hillary, too. I had two of 'em. One for and against,'” recalled Garrett.
But this one sounds like gold. Pat wrote the tune all of a week ago. He then called a record company pal in Nashville and was practically on the next plane to record. As of Friday, it was the Number 4 country download, just ahead of Taylor Swift.
“She’s a moose shootin’ mama, Sarah is the girl for me,” sang Garrett.
Maybe the most wonderfully American element of all this is, the song was inspired by a photograph of the governor holding a deer rifle sent to Pat by his good friend and web master who's a supporter of yes, Barack Obama.
The McCain campaign has taken the song to its political heart and plan to play "Moose Shootin’ Mama" plenty between now and November.
“They asked me how my last two weeks in October was. I said, ‘I will clear my schedule. It's not that full, but I’ll clear it,’" laughed Garrett.
