Fall Out Boy To Say Farewell?

[ Category: News in Music ]

'What a Catch, Donnie' clip is full of metaphors hinting at the band's farewell.

Well, it's finally here. After much consternation and hand-wringing, Fall Out Boy premiered their video for "What a Catch, Donnie" on Thursday morning (August 6) on MTV. And by the time you've read this sentence, those whispers that it might just be the band's final video will have probably graduated to a full-blown roar.

Because, despite FOB's insistence that "Donnie" isn't a goodbye so much as it's "a cliffhanger," the clip plays as one long swan song. Much like the song itself, it's nostalgic — there are nods to at least half a dozen previous videos in it — and symbolic: Fall Out frontman Patrick Stump piloting a rickety ship out toward the horizon, stopping occasionally to salvage bits of the band's past. And that's not even counting the ending, which is like getting walloped over the head by one giant metaphor.

The video opens with Stump as the solitary sailor, plinking on a piano, scribbling in a journal and staring out at the vast seascape. We don't know how long he's been on this voyage, or even where he's going, but we know he's very much alone, and the days have taken to dragging into weeks (or even months). Eventually, the monotony is broken up when a wayward seagull lands on his ship, and Stump nurses it back to health — a nod, Wentz told MTV News, to the life of reclusive genius Nikola Tesla. And then things start getting interesting.

Off in the distance, Stump notices a sinking ship and an accompanying trail of wreckage. But this isn't your average flotsam and/or jetsam; it's literally pieces of Fall Out Boy's past. The antlers from their breakout "Sugar, We're Going Down" video. The striped coat Stump wore in the clip for "Dance, Dance." The giant "FOB" backdrop from "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs." The casket Joe Trohman emerges from (and solos upon) in "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race."

Stump fishes them out of the water, then spots a spate of life rafts on the horizon. Sitting on the water are Trohman, drummer Andy Hurley and a host of FOB's pals, including Panic! at the Disco's Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith (guess former Panic members Ryan Ross and Jon Walker didn't make it out alive). Stump pulls all of them aboard, and all of a sudden, his lonely boat has become a floating monument to his band's past achievements. Instant nostaligia.

But back on the sinking ship — which is now quickly disappearing below the waves — we see Pete Wentz. He's sitting in the crow's nest, smiling. He gives a salute as the water envelops him. He's literally going down with the ship, like any good captain should (I believe this is what we in the business call "a visual metaphor"). This is not noticed by Stump and the rest of his shipmates, who head out to sea — toward the future, and rather happily so.

What happens next? At the moment, we don't know much of anything. Maybe this is where that mysterious "other video" Wentz mentioned will come into play. Or maybe it won't, and this really is it for Fall Out Boy (though, knowing them, I sort of doubt it). But if this is their swan song and FOB really are ready to sail off into the sunset, well, "Donnie" is the most fitting farewell I can think of. It's unquestionably the best video they've ever made — visually striking, somber and pretty in tone, smart in subject matter. And if Wentz and company have learned anything over the past half-decade, it's that it's always best to go out on top. Even if you're at the bottom of the ocean.

''The Jay Leno Show' Premier; Jay-Z To Perform

[ Category: News in Music ]

Along with Kanye West and Rihanna, the artist will headline with Jay's new single, 'Run This Town,' on September 14.

Jay-Z is surely talking about New York City in his new single, "Run This Town," featuring Kanye West and Rihanna. But unless he's got something up his sleeve, it looks like the first TV performance of the track, from his upcoming album, The Blueprint 3, will be taking place on the West Coast.

It was confirmed on Thursday (August 6) that the MC will be joined by Kanye West and Rihanna to perform the track on the premiere episode of "The Jay Leno Show," the comic's new NBC show. The show is scheduled for September 14 at 10 p.m., just a few days after Jay releases his album on September 11.

Leno will be embarking on a new stage in his career as he transitions from manning "The Tonight Show" to a prime-time variety hour.

Jay, of course, recently purchased his recording independence after paying a reported $5 million to secure the rights to his music away from longtime recording home Def Jam Records. The rapper inked a massive deal with Live Nation and partnered with Atlantic Records, where longtime Jay-Z industry allies Lyor Cohen and Kevin Lives will help him distribute the final album in his Blueprint trilogy.

Kanye West and Rihanna will join Jay-Z soon to shoot the video for "Run This Town," which will be helmed by director Anthony Mandler, who worked with the rapper on his clip for "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)."

Paula Abdul Discusses 'American Idol' Departure

[ Category: News in Music ]

Paula Abdul, who announced via Twitter that she's leaving "American Idol" on Tuesday, talked about the situation with TMZ at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport on Wednesday.

"It's been overwhelming, what's going on right now," she said, adding that any offers coming her way these days are being considered. "So I have to really carefully think about it."

One of those offers came from former "American Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe to appear on his show, "So You Think You Can Dance." He told "Access Hollywood,", "I'll ask her to come on the show... possibly as a performer and as a dancer." He also told TVGuide.com that now that she's free of her "Idol" duties "she's got no excuse" but to come on his show as well.

But if the offer is on the table, Abdul said she wasn't aware of it. "I didn't know I was being given an offer," she said. "I love the show. It's a wonderful show, [but] I don't know."

Until she actually figures out what the next step in her career is, Abdul did share that there are a few very important things she'll miss most now that her time is over with the show after eight seasons. "My compadres, of course," she said. "I love the kids, and that's the thing I enjoy, but they all reached out and called me."

Apparently, the kids aren't the only ones who are missing Abdul these days. "[Simon and I talk] all the time," she said. "He misses me already."

Eminem Vs. Mariah: Fans Take Sides

[ Category: News in Music ]

Whose side are you on?

Soon after Eminem released his track "Bagpipes From Baghdad," which takes aim at Mariah Carey, there had been speculation that Carey's single and the video for "Obsessed" were a counterattack on the rapper. Everyone in Carey's camp denied the rumors, but it seems like Eminem responded with another dis track, "The Warning."

Now fans are taking sides, saying Mariah needs to own up to her reported relationship with the rapper. "Eminem just OWNED Mariah," QUEST IS ABDC wrote on MTVNews.com. "Play with fire, you'll get burned. She needs to admit and face the truth about the relationship. If they didn't really have a relationship, Eminem wouldn't go this far. He's telling the TRUTH."

Meanwhile, jpowell06 wrote, "I like Mariah and all, but she kinda had it comin'. If you had a relationship with the dude, just say it and be over it. Don't deny it. Em is just being Em, hate it or love it. I think he went a lil overboard with the name callin', but I still love him, cuz he's always being real and tellin' it like it is. I wanna see what Nick Cannon gonna say about this one."

Despite the song's racy content, Liss2504 can't help but love Em for making "The Warning." "I love Em!" she wrote. "But dis is HARSH! I still love him!"

But there are a few fans who don't think too highly of Em's song. "Eminem has officially fell off," Bashmatic wrote. "When Rick Ross ... says he's not what he used to be, Em is as quiet as a mouse. Instead, he goes after an R&B singer. Never in the history of rap has this been cool."

Zoidburg took Mariah's side: "We will only be talking about this until Mariah's next single. Eminem don't matter!"

But there are still the fans who think the whole thing is just about publicity. "I think it's all for sales," Andrew told MTV News in Times Square. " 'Cause when you hear Mariah going at Em, everybody's going to wanna hear it."

Antwone Wright agreed, saying, "It's all a publicity stunt."

And some felt that the track confirms everyone's suspicions: Mariah's "Obsessed" was, in fact, all about Em. "I guess that was Eminem in Mariah's new video, because he sure sounds pissed off on that dis record," Asonye88 wrote. "If I was Mariah, I would leave Em alone! Dude is really crazy!"

Chelle06 added: "He went hard on this track, but this dude seriously got voice mails from, like, nine years ago. That sounds a lil obsessed!"

What are your thoughts? Feel free to express them below!

Slim Da Mobster, New Protege of Dr. Dre?

[ Category: News in Music ]

Also of Eminem and 50 Cent, apparently. The South Central rookie will be featured on Dre's Detox, alongside Lil Wayne and T.I., in Mixtape Daily.

We all know Dr. Dre has an ear for beats, but the West Coast superproducer also has a keen sense of recognizing upcoming lyrical talent.

Dre's The Chronic launched Snoop Dogg's career, and his second solo album, 2001, helped solidify Eminem as a serious talent to pay attention to in the game. With his third opus on the way, the good doctor has tapped South Central rookie Slim Da Mobster to contribute to Detox, alongside heavyweights like Lil Wayne and T.I.

"I'm not even focused on my album right now," Slim told us in Los Angeles. "I'm all about his album. 'Cause the better I do on that, the better it is for the situation with my album."

Da Mobster might be new on the scene, but the Los Angeles rhyme-spitter impressed Eminem so much that he pushed to have him ink a deal.

After getting the co-signs from the big homies Dre and Em, 50 Cent was the next to jump onboard behind the young rapper. Now, Slim Da Mobster is the first artist signed to all three artists, representing G-Unit/Shady/Aftermath.
To add to the repertoire, Slim is managed by industry veteran John Monopoly, who helped usher Kanye West from producer to breakthrough artist.

Kelly Clarkson and Miley Cyrus Bring Back VH1 Divas

[ Category: News in Music ]

After five long diva-less years, there's a new crop of pop stars set to claim, not to mention redefine, the title. Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson, Adele and Leona Lewis are slated to perform at this year's VH1 Divas concert. The show, the first since 2004, will take place live on VH1 on September 17.

Cyrus, Adele, Lewis and Clarkson join a long list of esteemed singers who have graced the Divas stage, including Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Cher, Diana Ross and Beyoncé, to name a few. And although those ladies may seem more experienced in diva-dom, the show's producer, Lee Rolontz, assured fans in a statement that these girls are up to the task. "Adele, Kelly, Leona and Miley have all captured the world's attention with their talent and have earned their designation as VH1 Divas this year. Don't let some of their young ages fool you — these women are among the best entertainers in the world and will continue to thrill music fans for a long time to come."

According to the press release, more presenters and performers are expected to be announced in the weeks leading up to the show. As in years past, the show will also benefit the VH1 Save the Music Foundation.

The VH1 Divas series premiered in 1998 with Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin and Celine Dion. Subsequent shows included everyone from Donna Summer to Nelly Furtado to Mary J. Blige. The last concert took place in 2004 and featured Patti LaBelle, Jessica Simpson, Debbie Harry and Eve.

American Idol Fans Mob Tour Buses For... Marriage Proposals?

[ Category: News in Music ]

LOS ANGELES — The 2009 American Idols Live! tour is well under way, and for many fans, the highlight of the show doesn't happen onstage. Instead, it's all about the parking lot.

"I came all the way from Mexico City just to meet Adam Lambert," said Rebeca, one of several hundred "Idol" fanatics who patiently waited outside the Staples Center on Thursday night to catch a glimpse of this year's top 10.

Before and after every gig on tour, Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and the rest of the contestants pose for blurry camera-phone pics, sign autographs and meet their supporters face to face in a ritual that has become as important to the "Idol" tour as the singers' set lists. The get-together, referred to by the fans as being "At the Buses," gives the die-hards the chance to share an iota of a moment with their favorites (as well as tossing them letters, gifts and kisses) before they jump on the tour bus to leave town.

As to be expected, the superfans were out in full force on Thursday to catch their hometown hero, Adam Lambert, in the flesh. Girls as young as 12 and as old as 66 sported homemade bedazzled T-shirts and talked openly about the naughty things they'd do to him while ironically clutching the Rolling Stone issue in which the singer announced he's gay. "A girl can dream," said Wendy, the mom of a teenage Glambert, Shelby, who proudly displayed her "Adam Lambert's Future Wife" tee.

Although certain clusters claimed to have known the singer since he was a child and others insisted they've been following since he toured with "Wicked," one of the more memorable fans was a retiree in her 60s (who requested anonymity for this article) who claimed that Adam helped get her groove back. "I've never done anything this crazy in my whole life. My friends think I'm insane. We were here from 1 o'clock to 5 o'clock in 100-degree heat waiting for Adam to come out, and he didn't." (The superfan's story ends happily: Once Adam emerged from backstage, he signed one of the eight copies of Rolling Stone she brought.)

Despite the celebratory — if not anxious — mood, fan rivalry usually reserved for internet message boards and comment sections occasionally spilled into real life. A gaggle of Glamberts took devilish glee in pointing out that their fave received much more applause than Kris Allen, or as they coldly called him, "the guy who won." (Perhaps it was a good thing that Kris opted to say hi to the fans before the concert so he didn't have to mingle with "the haters.")

Meanwhile, the Danny Gokey fans had much more personal stories to share. One Gokey girl, Nancy, who turned her RV into a Gokey shrine on wheels, cited Danny's backstory as the reason she warmed up to her newborn granddaughter's name. "I didn't like the name Sophia. But then when I found out that Danny's wife's name was Sophia, I was so happy." (You could imagine how the Gokey fans reacted when he quickly popped out to flash his "heart" hand sign as cameras flashed in his face.)

The fans may have turned up for their specific singers, but the chatter about the tour was unanimous: Lambert stole the show; Scott MacIntyre was a thousand miles better than they expected; and thank goodness Kris Allen dropped "No Boundaries" from the set list. They were also concerned (and confused) about Megan Joy's disappearing act. She ditched the final group number, and it felt as though everyone noticed. (Turned out she was pretty ill and wanted to rest up after her set.)

It was 1 a.m. by the time Allison Iraheta, Michael Sarver (who barely blinked when a Lambert fan screamed "Adam Lambert rocks" as he signed her souvenir program), Matt Giraud (who accepted a fan's marriage proposal via Ring Pop) and Scott MacIntyre said good night to the crowd, and by that point, several fans had to get a good night's sleep.

They did, after all, have a big day ahead of them. The "Idol" tour was hitting Ontario, California, and they had to make sure they got to town early enough to score a good spot at the buses once again.

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Jackson Family Gathers At Cemetery Hours Before Memorial

[ Category: News in Music ]

Michael Jackson's family is scheduled to gather on Tuesday morning (July 7) for a private funeral service at Los Angeles' Forest Lawn Memorial Park just a few hours before the pop singer's fans will pay their respects at the Staples Center across town.

According to TMZ, several members of the Jackson clan visited the cemetery on Monday night. Brother Randy and sister LaToya were spotted entering Forest Lawn, and a hearse was spotted pulling up to the Hall of Liberty complex for what the gossip site speculated might have been a private viewing of the body. People reported that a dozen or more cars arrived at Forest Lawn on Monday night for the family event. Fans and media were camped out outside of Forest Lawn, where visitors from as far as Japan and Spain gathered to pay their final respects to the singer, who died at age 50 nearly two weeks ago following cardiac arrest.

Although unconfirmed at press time, TMZ also reported that after Tuesday morning's private memorial ceremony at Forest Lawn, Jackson's coffin will be transported to the Staples Center.

The roster of attendees slated to participate in the memorial at the Staples Center includes Lionel Richie, Usher, Kobe Bryant, Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson, among others. Wonder and Carey are expected to perform, as well as Jennifer Hudson. Beyoncé and Whitney Houston are rumored to be attending but not participating in the official hourlong ceremony.

Along with former wife Debbie Rowe — the mother of Jackson's two oldest children — another intimate who will not be attending the memorial is longtime friend Elizabeth Taylor, 77, who tweeted on Monday that, "I just don't believe that Michael would want me to share my grief with millions of others. How I feel is between us. Not a public event." One of Jackson's closest friends, Taylor said she was asked to speak at the Staples Center but declined. "I cannot be part of the public whoopla," she explained, "and I cannot guarantee that I would be coherent to say a word."

As part of the heavy security measures in place for the public service, police closed off multiple areas outside of Staples Center and the Nokia Theater late Monday night. Only credentialed media members with blue wristbands will be allowed to roam the area on Tuesday morning, while fans with tickets and gold wristbands will be able to enter designated areas where they will be ushered into the separate venues.

All week, city officials have urged fans to stay away from the downtown Los Angeles area. No giant screens are in the area for fans to view the service, as previously reported. Only platforms for media cameras have been erected near the scene.

The doors are set to open at 8 a.m. PT, and the memorial service is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. According to CNN, the memorial service is expected to run for one hour. Participants were rehearsing Monday, according to reports, though no names were released.

MTV's live coverage of the Michael Jackson public memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles will begin on Tuesday at 12 p.m. ET / 9 a.m. PT.
