The Premier League (due to its official sponsors also called the "Barclays Premier League", and colloquially "The Premiership") is the top division in English football and is thus at the top level of the English league system. There are currently 20 clubs which partake in a round which spans from August up until May of the following year. An annual promotion and relegation system in conjunction with the lower Football League makes a fresh exchange of three clubs possible every year.

The FA Premier League was founded on the 20 February 1992 and the play began officially on the 15 August of that year. The clubs in the former elite First Division benefited significantly from the increased television revenue and split from the Football League which itself lost its long-lasting hegemony (since 1888) as the platform for English and Welsh football. The Premier League has become the sports league with the highest number of viewers in the world since then.

Of the now 40 participating clubs so far only four teams have won the Premier League Cup: Manchester United (eleven titles), Arsenal (three titles), Chelsea (three titles) and Blackburn Rovers (one title). In the 2009/10 season, Chelsea won the championship.

Premier League betting has become one of the biggest revenue turnover off-springs of the Premier League in recent times. In the United Kingdom all bookmakers offer betting markets for the league and it has become the single most bet on sports competition in the country. The advent of online betting has extended this industry to much of the rest of Europe as well as Asia and other countries. An estimated 70% of all online sportsbooks now offer betting and odds for the English Premier League

The Premier League is considered the "greatest show on earth" and with over a billion viewers is the world's most watched sporting league. Distribution in overseas countries is exceptionally wide and the games of the Premier League are shown in a total of 195 countries. Broadcasts usually take place through the Rupert Murdoch controlled media conglomerate News Corporation (the "NewsCorp") - to which in turn BSkyB and thus the first broadcast rights for the UK and Ireland belong. News Corp also has bought advertising space in the Premier League for the Fox Soccer Channel, which is in charge of broadcasting in the United States. Particularly however in Asia the Premier League is exceptionally popular and is in fact the most distributed and watched sports program.
