Install Mac OS X on any PC

It all started when Steve Jobs got the idea to make the transition from PowerPC to Intel. Somebody got their grubby little hands on a developer's release of OS X 10.4 "Tiger" that was compiled for an x86 PC, and next thing you know, it's all over the intarwebz. Since then, the OSX86 Project, as it's been called, has come a long way, encompassing every version of Tiger since 10.4.1 and every version of OS X 10.5 "Leopard" so far, allowing you to have OS X on any computer you want, Intel or AMD, Apple hardware or not. So you might be interested, you say? Well, read on if you want to learn the dark secrets of creating your own Hackintosh.

MATERIALS NEEDED:
-A copy of the OS X Install DVD with hacked kernel. I'm not going to tell you where to get it because I'd rather not have my ass sued by Apple, but I'll tell you that Google and The Pirate Bay are your friends. Be sure to get the correct version of the disc appropriate for your processor (Intel or AMD). You may also use a retail disc, but it will require patching.

-A blank DVD, you will need a dual-layer DVD if you're downloading the Leopard install DVD.

-The computer on which you want OS X installed. You'll need at least 4GB of free hard drive space if you're installing Tiger, and at least 9GB of space if you're installing Leopard. The computer must also have a minimum of 256MB of RAM for Tiger, 512MB for Leopard. This guide assumes that you are dedicating an entire hard drive to OS X. The computer must have a processor that at least supports the SSE2 instruction set, SS3 is recommended. You will have SSE3 for sure if your computer/processor is from late 2004 or newer. If you're not sure, download CPU-Z at http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

KNOWLEDGE NEEDED:
-You will need a somewhat working knowledge of a Unix/Linux terminal if you're going to be installing drivers and whatnot.

-If extra drivers are needed, you will need to know the Device ID and Vendor ID of the hardware that needs drivers.

TIME:
Excluding the time it takes to obtain the DVD, roughly 1-3 hours.

[howto]

So, you've just finished "obtaining" the DVD, and you're all psyched and ready to install OS X? Well, calm down, you first need to get things ready.

1. Burn the disc image, preferably at the lowest burning speed your drive supports to ensure that it burns well.
If your burning program comes with the ability to check the integrity of the DVD, do so. Nothing's as frustrating as getting to the installer, only to find out that it won't let you due to a sh*tty burn.

2. If there's anything important on the hard drive that you will be installing OS X to, back it up.

Now there's two ways you can install OS X. You can either install natively, which gives you plenty of speed, but if you're missing drivers, then you're screwed. You can also install via VMware if you have it, being sure to set the virtual machine to use the physical hard drive instead of a virtual one. The VMware process is much slower, but allows you to troubleshoot and install drivers easily.

3. Restart your computer with the install DVD in the drive, and make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the DVD drive.

4. Boot from the DVD.

When all of the booting is said and done...holy s***, you see a language select screen. Select the language you want to use for the installer, although considering everyone here speaks English, I don't know why you'd use anything else...

After that, you will be taken to the actual installer screen.

Now, before you do anything...HALT. HAMMER TIME. Look at the menu bar at the top of the screen, and click on Utilities > Disk Utility.

When Disk Utility loads, you should see your hard drive in the side panel on the left (if you don't, consult the common errors/problems section at the end of the howto). Click it once, and then click on the "Erase" tab. Give a name to your hard drive, select the format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase.

When it's finished, quit Disk Utility, and continue with the installation, going past the licensing info and whatnot...nobody reads those anyway. Now you'll be taken to a screen where you select the hard drive you want to install to, although it's usually selected for you.

Depending on the version of OS X you're given, you may be taken to a screen that says "Click 'Install' to perform a basic installation of this package." If so, DON'T CLICK INSTALL. Instead, click Customize. If you click "Install", it will install OS X without the patched kernel, and you won't be able to use it. Some versions will take you directly to the screen that lets you select packages. Those versions rock.

Once you arrive here, select the packages you want. Be sure to select the version appropriate to your processor (Intel or AMD), and if you have an SSE2 processor, then select the packages appropriate for it. If you have SSE3 on the processor, don't install the SSE2 stuff unless you want Rosetta and other things to run ungodly slow.

Once you've selected everything you want installed, just click on the Install button, skip the DVD check, and go do something for an hour or two. Read a book. Play your favorite video game. Entertain yourself.

When you come back later, the installer should be finished (or nearing finished). It will take you to a screen that will ask you to reboot the computer. Click Reboot if the 30 seconds haven't passed already, and take the DVD out of the drive. Let the computer boot, and it should boot into OS X. But wait! You're not finished just yet. You're required to do all the lame setup stuff like normal. Breeze through the stuff quickly, and then...voila! You'll boot into the Aqua goodness that is Mac OS X.

NOTE: Unless you install Leopard with "vanilla" kernel, don't even think about upgrading the normal way.

COMMON ERRORS/PROBLEMS:
-When I boot from the DVD and open Disk Utility, my hard drive doesn't show up!
~Well, this means one of two things. Either your hard drive died, which is very unlikely, or, surprise, surprise, OS X doesn't have drivers for your computer's north/southbridge (that's what you get for installing the OS on unsupported hardware). This usually occurs in SATA hard drives. Your only real solution is to find drivers for your north/southbridge. Try http://insanelymac.com and see what you can find.

-Help! Device X/Y/Z isn't working!
~Again, you're running the OS on unsupported hardware. Try InsanelyMac and see if you can find drivers. If you can't, you're SOL. Don't go b******* to someone, either, if you can't find anything.

-The installer doesn't get past point x/y/z!
~Your course of action depends on how far you get. Most of the time, the installer stops while it's still loading, that is, when the gray Apple logo is on the screen (or when you see a sh*tload of white text on black background fly), in which case, it's something hardware related. If it stops with a "Still waiting for root device..." error, then that means the installer can't find your drive, and you're going to have to install SATA drivers. Woo. I can't stress this enough, try InsanelyMac. 9 times out of 10, they'll have the answer you seek.

-The installer loads fine...until it gets to a blue screen, then the computer shuts down.
~Your processor is probably too old. Get new computer.

-Video doesn't work/I can't change my resolution!
~You don't have Core Image/Quartz Extreme enabled, most likely due to lack of video card drivers. You should know by now where to look for drivers.

-When I try to open a program, its icon bounces in the Dock for a while, but nothing happens.
~Try running the program using Rosetta. Right-click the icon in the Finder, and click on the checkbox that says "Open using Rosetta".

[/howto]

And if any of you try it and succeed, then post screenshots of your desktop with the "About This Mac" window in this thread.

  How-To: Homebrew Your PSP (Slim)

Homebrew Your PSP (Slim)

Some of you have been waiting quite anxiously for this one *coughFlashcough*. This tutorial is written with PSP Slims in mind, and when you're finished, you should have what is known as a "Pandora's Battery" and a "Magic Memory Stick".

Advantages of Homebrew:
-A recovery mode is available by holding the R trigger when you boot up your PSP, in case you regally f*** something up

-You can run cool programs that Sony doesn't want you to run

-You can still run official Sony games and software

-You can customize the XMB in cool ways, such as changing the behavior of the wave

-You can run UMD backups in ISO, CSO, or DAX format

MATERIALS NEEDED:
-A PSP Slim. Really, I shouldn't even have to say this one.

-A Memory Stick PRO Duo with 512MB or more of space on it. A lot of PSP Slims are obtained through the Daxter pack, which includes the 1GB Memory Stick.

-A spare PSP battery you're willing to sacrifice. Yes, I said "sacrifice". What we're doing to the battery is irreversible. This how-to assumes that you're using the battery that comes with the PSP Slim.

-The TOTALNewbi-easyInstaller to prep your Memory Stick with the necessary files, available for download at:

http://dl.qj.net/TOTALNewbi-easyInstaller-PSP-Tools-Utilities-(on -PC)/pg/12/fid/14749/catid/193

-An Exacto knife or equivalent tool (a tiny flathead screwdriver works)

-Electrical tape

-The ability to take risks

KNOWLEDGE NEEDED:

-You're going to be performing surgery on a battery. You can put 2 and 2 together.

-The ability to follow directions to a T (Seriously).

TIME:

Less than an hour. This is a pretty quick one, when you get right down to it.

[howto]

OK, so without further ado, let's get this tutorial started!

1. Download all the necessary files, and prep your workspace.
As I said earlier, you're going to be performing surgery on a PSP battery. Make sure that you have plenty of space and plenty of light so you can see what you're doing...one wrong move, and you could end up killing your PSP battery.

2. Run the TOTALNewbie-easyInstaller.
This will format your Memory Stick with all of the files necessary to get things going. The installer has very clear directions, so you shouldn't mess up too bad.

NOTE: You will come to a screen at some point that gives your four options. Choose option 4.

3. After running the easyInstaller, turn off your PSP and remove the Memory Stick and battery. Have your Exacto knife and electrical tape at the ready.
It's also a good idea to ground yourself at this point and remove all static electricity by touching an unpainted metal surface.

4. Using the Exacto knife, carefully remove the top cover of the battery.
When I say carefully, I mean carefully. If you accidentally puncture the actual lithium ion battery...explosions could happen. Yes, the kind with fire.

5. With the battery cover lifted, gently pull out the battery's chip without disconnecting it from the battery.
This isn't too hard to do...just push it away from the battery.

6. Using the Exacto knife, cut the following pin on the battery's chip:

Here is where you must be extremely careful. Be sure that when you cut the pin, the tip of the Exacto knife does not touch any of the other pins or the chip-doing so can cause a short and kill your battery dead.

TIP: If you don't want to risk cutting the pin, you can scratch the trace that leads to the pin on the chip, and if you want to revert the battery back to a normal one, all you have to do is get a graphite pencil and redraw the trace.

7. After cutting the pin, put the chip back in its place and using the electrical tape, tape the battery cover back on.

8. Put the Memory Stick into the PSP, and then put the battery in.
The moment you put the battery in is the moment of truth. If the PSP automatically turns on when you put the battery in, then congratulations! You did everything right, and you have a Pandora's Battery. If not...well, then, you just ruined a battery. :P

9. When prompted, install the 3.71M33 custom firmware.
Basically, just press X and wait for a minute or two. When the PSP resets itself, take out the battery and put in a normal one, or plug in the charger and take out the battery, then reset. When the PSP boots, you should be running the custom firmware. You can be sure by going to Settings > System Settings > System Information. It should say 3.71M33.

(Optional) 10. Update your custom firmware.
You don't have to do this one, but if you want to update to newer versions of the firmware, go to http://dark-alex.org/ for updates.

At the time of this writing, the newest firmware version available was 3.90M33-2.

TIP: If you were like me and used your only battery as a Pandora's Battery, you'll notice that you can't start up your PSP using said battery. Well, never fear. If you haven't erased the files from earlier off of your Memory Stick, then go to http://dark-alex.org/ and download the "Time Machine", and put it on your PSP. When you run it, select the option to just write the IPL to the Memory Stick. Afterwards, you may delete everything on the Memory Stick EXCEPT the file MSIPL.BIN. That file needs to stay there.

Once that's been done, as long as the Memory Stick is in the PSP, you can boot your PSP as normal.

COMMON ERRORS/PROBLEMS:
-I punctured the battery, but it didn't explode. Can I still use the battery?
~DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, USE THAT BATTERY. THROW IT AWAY AND GET A NEW ONE.

-I cut the pin like you said, but when I tape everything up and put the battery into the PSP, the PSP doesn't automatically turn on.
~One thing to check really quick is to make sure that the battery is ALL THE WAY IN. I thought I messed up the battery when I made my Pandora, but as it turns out, my battery just wasn't all the way in. But if you're sure it's all the way in, and you don't see it turn on, then you've just ruined a battery. This is why I recommended using a spare.

-Homebrew X/Y/Z doesn't work on my PSP!
~Not my problem. But seriously, do note what firmware the homebrew was coded for. The PSP Slim can run homebrew for every firmware version but 1.50. (NOTE: If you really want to use a piece of homebrew that's only coded for 1.50, then try using Dark_Alex's Time Machine to install a modified version of firmware 1.50 onto your PSP).

-Tell me where to download full UMD games!
~No. Just no.

All jokes aside, I don't know if the LHC will actually create black holes or not.

What I honestly think will happen is that we'll either find the Higgs boson or not. Who knows, maybe in the process, we'll accidentally discover one of the elements missing from the periodic table.

Slight violence, nothing too bad, though.

My personal opinion is that these girls are pretty damn low, beating up someone just over some stupid comments on Myspace and videotaping it just to put on the internet to humiliate someone. And I especially hate the one in the video who keeps yelling about not hitting the shelf so it won't break.

And the first thing I see, in large, bold print, is the last two words I was expecting: THE GAME. So then I realize what's written there, and immediately, say the word "DAMMIT!" At this point, my teacher hears, and she reprimands me for cursing. And of course, she asks me why I did this, and I told her the truth. "You made me lose THE GAME, ma'am." Of course, about half of the class knows about the game, and starts laughing. So I got pwned in front of the entire class...all because I just had to tell them all about THE GAME.

For those of you who are in the dark, it's an international law that was discussed about being potentially passed at the G8 summit, and basically, it would allow the government to search your laptop, iPod, any electronic device and confiscate it if "deemed necessary" if there's anything that infringes copyrights, and it also gives the government the power to monitor your internet and have your ISP give them their logs.

I've seen two terms thrown around in regards to this:

"The PATRIOT Act, only applied to everyone"
"Big Brother become real"

And I agree with both. I think it's beyond unfair that we have to surrender our rights because the rich fucktards at the RIAA and MPAA want to stay rich.

We all have our funny stories of falling asleep in class...so let's hear some. I've got two...

~A friend of a friend of mine once fell asleep on an open Sharpie, inhaling all of the fumes unintentionally. He wakes up as high as a butterfly, after a couple of hours...and stumbles over to a flight of stares. He mumbles "Stupid stairs, they go up and down at the same time..." and then he falls down the stairs.

~A kid in my class fell asleep, so the teacher got us to quietly grab our things and leave the classroom, while he grabbed the clock off of the wall and set it two hours forward. He then wakes the kid up and says, "Hey, I don't care if you sleep here or not, but it's 4:30, and I gotta get home sometime soon." The kid freaks out hardcore and runs out of the classroom to our laughter.

I can get on BC every single day in the middle of school because my teacher lets me use her computer. That's pretty 1337, if I do say so myself. And on Wednesdays, I can get on for up to an hour and a half at a time!

OK, everyone, I've now tweaked with BC Radio so you can now play it in Windows Media Player if you so desire, however, you'll still need Winamp with the Oddcast plugin if you wish to DJ. This info is the NEW info for the stream, do NOT use the old info.

The New BC Radio Link

EDIT: Actually, theoretically, this should work with any media player that supports the MP3 format and audio streaming. Someone test it out on other players and let me know how it works out.

This is at one of the first rest stops when entering New Mexico-note the small sign that says "Watch for snakes".

Only in New Mexico will you find a sign that somehow reminds you of The Terminator.

Doesn't anyone think so?

I can hardly find GBA games anywhere, and the places that do carry them have sh*tty games. On Gamespot, the newsticker type thing that each page has usually has five bits of news, on the GBA one, there's only two. I haven't seen a GBA SP in a store in quite a while...

I only watch Adult Swim. There's never anything good on the regular Cartoon Network block of programming (reruns of Chowder, Johnny Test, Ben 10: Alien Force, etc., the shitty dub of Naruto).

Even then, I only watch Adult Swim on Sunday-Thursday. Sunday for American Dad! and The Venture Bros., Monday-Thursday for Family Guy and ATHF.

So I was chilling at work, workin', right?

All of a sudden, this creepy hairy guy covered in tattoos walks in with his two kids. Nothing out of the ordinary minus the creepy vibe coming off of the guy. And then all hell begins to break loose.

First, the two kids (older sister, 8-ish, younger brother, 4-5-ish, both ugly as sin) start chasing each other around the store (which is pretty damn tiny) yelling and screaming at each other. I'm annoyed, but continue doing stuff. Next, the kids said something like the following in IRL Caps Lock to me and my manager at least twice:

"OHWOW,YOUGUIZEHAVEWALL-ETHEVIDEOGAME?HAVEYOUSEENWALL-E,ITHINKIT' SSOFUNNY...OHWHOAYOUGUIZEHAVESPACECHIMPSTHEVIDEOGAMEFORTHEWIIHOLY COWTHAT'SSOAWESOMEOHMANLOOKATTHISGAMEITLOOKSSOAWESOMEHOLYCOWCHECK OUTALLTHEPS2GAMES"

But it gets bettar.

From there, the kids clung to my manager and harassed the shit out of her, asking her stupid questions, and asking if she had played any of those crappy shovelware games for just about every system out there...and then they found the stack of those free handouts we give out with deals and crap on them.

Oh God, that stack of handouts.

First, the sister asked if they're free. My manager said yes. She asked if she can have one. My manager said yes. The girl then took one. Then her brother asked if they're free. My manager said yes. You can see where I'm going with this. Repeat this process four, count 'em, FOUR times. They also tried to pull that stunt with a stack of old Game Informers we had lying around..."Are these free?" "No." "Can I have one?" "No."

While all this is going on, daddy had just been lazily looking around the used PS2 games bin, not saying a word or making a sound.

Then these two kids started running around the store chasing each other and screaming again. I just tried my best to ignore them and start organizing the Wii section of the store. They then started tapping on the glass case that holds the used GBA games. After that, they ran some more, running into a display rack with fake MS Point cards and empty GH: Aerosmith boxes on them and knocked them over. Of course, my manager was quite irate, and tells me to pick it up while she puts the other guy in charge and goes outside in the rain to have a quick smoke. I felt so sorry for her, because the kids actually FOLLOWED her outside and stared at her and spoke at her while she tried to smoke to calm down. Not a second after she threw the cigarette butt into a puddle, the little boy picked it up and started playing with it. My manager snatched it out of his hands and shooed the kids inside so it would be easier to watch them.

Of course, daddy was still just casually browsing through the store, not even noticing what's going on around him.

More chasing each other from the kids, and they even ran into another customer a few times. I finished organizing the Wii section and moved onto the PSP section, and right at that moment, the two kids walked up to the wall I just organized, and started punching the boxes and knocking them on the floor whilst giggling, and then pretended to be good by putting them back in the PS2 section. Bricks were nearly shat, to say the least, but after some more listening to the two kids scream and talk in IRL Caps Lock, the dad finally headed towards the cash register. His daughter bugged him a bunch (This was the only time she was quiet enough to not be heard), and then he picked up a game. Don't know what console it was for, but the boxart was basically bleeding pink. She then said in this faux sweet voice, "I love you, Daddy", and the guy just grunted at her with his back turned to her. No words. No turning back and nodding. Nothing but a grunt. My manager rang him up as quickly as she possibly could, and then kept trying to get him out as politely as possible, and on the way out, the guy quietly said, "Sorry my kids were such a handful."

I've never wanted to punch anyone so hard in my lifetime.

And afterwards, the manager, the other guy working, and I all agreed that the little girl would probably grow up to be a slut and sleep with the first guy who she thinks would like her.

TL;DR - Guy walks in with two kids. Two kids raise hell. I raged.
