miamiherald: A tropical storm formed Monday afternoon in the Bay of Campeche off the Gulf Coast of Mexico.
Tropical Storm Marco -- the 13th named storm of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season -- prompted hurricane watches from Cabo Rojo south to Veracruz, Mexico.
Its maximum winds grew from 35 mph to 65 mph, and forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said Marco could strengthen to a hurricane before making landfall along the central part of the Mexican coast late Monday or early Tuesday.
Despite Marco's intensification Monday, it remained a relatively compact storm, with tropical storm-force winds reaching about 30 miles from its center.
The hurricane center warned that Marco could dump up to six inches of rain in the southern Mexican states of Veracruz, Oaxaca and Tabasco.
