I was looking for something unique to kick off this particular weblog with, and when perusing the net I was lucky enough to come across the wonderful Zee Avi. The 23-year-old singer/songwriter was discovered on YouTube when she first uploaded her videos in 2007 under the username KokoKaina. Her cheerful voice and upbeat lyrics quickly gained her a sizable fan base on the popular site. By December, thousands of users had subscribed to Avi’s channel and she quickly closed a record deal with Brushfire Records and White Stripes manager Ian Monotone. Her first single was called “No Christmas For Me” and was included on the label’s holiday compilation album.

Having personally listened to everything of hers I could get my hands on I can truly say the girl has talent. She managed to keep me entertained for an extended period of time and though that is not an impossible feat it is an exceptional one, since her music could hardly be defined as what I typically enjoy listening to. There might be a hidden reason behind this though, since according to sources Avi grew up listening to the classic rock her parents enjoyed including but not limited to Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. I would agree that her Indie sound has been distantly influenced by her early introductions to music. Kudos to former hippie parents and 70’s classic rock!
