DSi XL FAQ

[ Category: Video Game Gear ]

Basics
The Nintendo DSi LL will be released in Japan on November 21 at a price of ¥20,000 ($218.50). It will be released in Europe and North America in Q1 2010. It is functionally identical to the current DSi, but features a larger body and larger screens.

Size

The DSi XL measures 161 x 91.4 x 21.2 mm (6.34 x 3.6 x 0.83"), 1.61x the total volume of the DSi, and 1.48x the volume of the DS Lite. It weighs 314 grams, compared to the DSi's 214 and the DS Lite's 218.

Screens
The screens are 4.2 inches diagonal. For comparison, the DSi's screens measure 3.25 inches, and the DS Lite's screens are 3 inches. Though there hasn't been a specific announcement about it, there is no reason to believe the screens will have a different resolution from the current DSi.

Colors

The Japanese version will launch in three colors: Wine Red, Dark Brown, and Natural White. No announcements have been made regarding color for any other region.

Included software
Preloaded on the internal memory: the DSi Browser, Flipnote Studio, Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, Brain Age Express: Math, and Meikyou Kokugo Rakubiki Jiten, a dictionary program.

Accessories

The DSi XL, like every other DS, includes a stylus that fits into the unit. The DSi XL stylus is 96mm long, just 4mm longer than the stylus on the DSi. The XL also includes a 129.3mm-long pen-shaped stylus, which does not fit inside the console. In addition, for the first time in the DS line, two DS models will share a common AC adapter. The DSi XL will use the same AC adapter as the DSi.

Battery
Despite the increased size of the displays, the battery in the DSi XL supposedly outlasts that in the DSi. Nintendo claims 13-17 hours of runtime on the lowest brightest setting, compared to 9-14 on the DSi. On the highest brightness, the DSi XL supposedly lasts 4-5 hours, one hour longer than the range for the DSi.

Compatibility
As a DSi, the XL will be able to play DS cartridges, including those designed only for DSi and those enhanced for DSi. It will also be capable of downloading and playing DSiWare. Like the current DSi, there is no slot for Game Boy Advance cartridges.

Transfer of existing DSiWare
Don't expect to transfer DSiWare purchases to the new system if you plan to upgrade. There is no end-user mechanism for transferring content from one DSi to another, and, at least in Australia, the process involves sending both a new DSi and your (broken) one in to have the company do it.

DSi LL coming to Europe in Q1 2010 as 'DSi XL'

[ Category: Video Game Gear ]

Nintendo may have announced Japanese plans for the new DSi LL first, but it's not taking long for news about other regions to come out. Nintendo of Europe confirmed to Videogamer that the giant handheld will be released in that region as the DSi XL, in the already-packed Q1 time frame. "The retail price of the Nintendo DSi XL is expected to be higher than that of the Nintendo DSi," the statement reads. "Further details will be released soon."

Nintendo officially announces large-screen DSi LL

[ Category: Video Game Gear ]

Well, that didn't take long. Just two days after Japan's Nikkei newspaper reported that Nintendo was planning a new variant of the DSi sporting larger 4" screens (which it called "speculation"), the Big N has gone and announced it -- for Japan, at least. Called the Nintendo DSi LL, the hefty handheld will be released in Japan on November 21 for a price of ¥20,000 ($221).

PSP Go'sConverter Cable

[ Category: Video Game Gear ]

As we discovered at E3 earlier this year, the PSP Go isn't compatible with your current PSP accessories, including the rarely-used PSP camera. With Invizimals coming to the PSP next year, we wondered if PSP Go owners would miss out on the fun. The good news: Sony's figured out a solution. The bad news? It looks like the picture you see above.

"With the new Converter Cable Adaptor, PSPgo users will be able to utilize the existing peripherals for PSP," Sony announced at Tokyo Game Show today. Peripherals like the 1Seg Tuner and GPS Receiver will be able to fit in the Go's proprietary "Multi use connector." Looking at the picture, this "cable" will wrap around the system, letting PSP Go owners plug new devices atop the system. Considering it adds a significant amount of bulk to the system, doesn't this conversion defeat the portable aspect of the Go entirely?

Get Your PS3 Slim In Other Colors

[ Category: Video Game Gear ]
[ Gaming Currently: Gaming  ]

The old PS3 was released in black, white, gunmetal. The new PS3 Slim has been only available in black..so far.
The company Colorware has announced that they're now taking orders to add color to the PS3 Slim. You can get your color layout one of two way, by either sending in your existing console for $149 or buy a PS3 Slim from from them directly, which goes for $449. Above is a layout I came up with.

Nintendo announces new Wiimote, DSi colors for North America

[ Category: Video Game Gear ]

Nintendo just announced that you'll finally be able to get a new color for your Wiimote. Black. This holiday season the company will be making a black Wiimote bundle available with the Wiimote and Wii MotionPlus, including a black Wii jacket, which is very slimming. However, you'll have to buy your black Nunchuk as a standalone, also available Holiday 2009.

According to the presser, "The Black bundle is the first new color for the Wii Remote and Wii MotionPlus," so let's hope this means a rainbow of colors coming down the pipeline next year. Right now this has nothing to go with, especially since the Wii won't be available in black over here, only in Japan. No mention of new console colors, nor of the blue Wiimote, seen recently at the World Hobby Fair. Will this be a case of having to chase down colors and accessories in different regions?

Nintendo is also bringing new DSi colors to North America, in the form of pink and white, available starting September 13. So we'll now have black, blue, white, and pink DSi ... why no funky colors like Japan? They get all the cool stuff.

The 360 Gets An Expensive Logitech Guitar

[ Category: Video Game Gear ]

You've seen Logitech's $200 guitar for the PS2 & PS3. It is not kidding around. Now see the 360 version, which courtesy of a hot orange paint scheme, is kidding around.

It transforms the guitar from "menacing metal axe" to "hair metal plaything", though really, the changes are only skin-deep. It's the same professionally-built guitar as the last one we saw, only for the Xbox 360. It's still $200, and it still looks pretty great.

That is, you can justify spending $200 on a guitar peripheral...which few of you probably could.

Halo 3: ODST wireless controller

[ Category: Video Game Gear ]
[  Mood: Cool ]

We've just confirmed that in the U.S., the Halo 3:ODST Collector's Pack featuring the custom wireless Xbox 360 controller will be a Gamestop exclusive, although it will be available in other regions at participating retailers. The pack, which will set you back $99, is already available for pre-order on Gamestop's site, and includes a Sgt. Johnson playable character token in the four player Firefight co-op mode, as well as acces to the Halo: Reach beta.

Anyone who pre-orders Halo:ODST, not just Gamestop shoppers, will get the Sgt. Johnson token as well as the Halo: Reach invitation, although you'll be shelling out an extra $40 for the custom controller if you decide to upgrade ... which actually isn't bad considering that they still retail for $49.99. How hardcore of a Halo fan are you? This pack might be your breaking point.

Nintendo remakes an old peice of technology

[ Category: Video Game Gear ]

LOS ANGELES — The Wii Vitality Sensor, Nintendo’s strangest announcement of its E3 lineup, seems even stranger when you know that it has its roots in a nearly-identical Nintendo 64 device.

Produced by Seta and released in 1998 alongside Tetris 64, the “Bio Sensor” did exactly what the Wii Vitality Sensor does — reads a player’s pulse as they play a game. It did it by clipping onto their earlobes, rather than their index fingers. In this particular title, you could have the game of Tetris either speed up or slow down as your heart rate increased. The former game mode would allow you to relax when things got too tense, and the latter would force you to control your reactions if you didn’t want the game to get uncontrollably difficult.

A clever concept, but one that ultimately went nowhere — Tetris 64 didn’t even make it out of Japan. One wonders if Nintendo has more compelling software for the accessory, this time around. If it does, it didn’t show it at E3, making the Vitality Sensor announcement a stumble for the company: An old device with no new software isn’t going to get anybody’s pulse racing.
